I remember when there were only 50 license plates Maybe it was vanity plates that made Obie think there were 57 states.

In some states the owner would buy one tag for the life of the vehicle or class of vehicle until it was no longer readable at all.

Now we have like a gazillion choices or at least 57 x 4 :)
