Gun Stores Seeing A Run On Ammunition
CBS Miami ^ | 4/18/2013

Posted on 04/20/2013 4:19:00 AM PDT by markomalley

Ammunition sellers and manufacturers say there’s been a run on bullets and they can’t keep their shelves stocked.

Jeff Dillard who runs National Armory in Pompano says it’s the worst he’s ever seen.

“I have never seen ammo so impossible to get,” said Dillard.

He said demand for ammunition has been growing and spiked over the past couple of days.

“Because of the terrorist attacks and the gun control legislation people are getting in more of a panic situation,” Dillard said.

When he can get bullets, Dillard says, they’re expensive.

“We paid five times the price we would normally pay,” he said, adding that it isn’t just ammunition running low, he can’t even get the parts to make bullets. “All our vendors are telling us not only are they out of stock but some are two to three million bullet-heads in back-order. They won’t even take our orders because they don’t know when they’ll be able to fill them.”

Ammunition manufacturer Andy Delatorre says can hardly keep up with ammunition orders, but the shortage on parts has hurt his business so much he had to lay off four people last month.

“We have had to shut down 50 percent of manufacturing process. People are out on street without jobs right now. We just can’t find enough raw material,” he said.

Ammunition manufacturers and sellers say they see no end in sight to the demand for bullets. “A lot of the distributors and suppliers are telling us it could be 2-3 months before we can get an ample supply of ammo and all that’s going to do is to drive up the prices,” said Dillard.

Bullet head’s the part of the bullet that gets shot down the barrel (from “msm guide to bullets, clips and scary parts)

Funny isn't it? From the article: "...he can’t even get the parts to make bullets."

All you need to make bullets (not cartridges) is a hunk of lead.

“Load what you have...”. Great advice. I was waiting until I had the “right” primers for the .308, the CCI 342s, but now I figure we may never see those again. I’ve got 2,000 Federal Match, though. They’re not recommended for use in an M1A, but I’m going to use them just the same.

They’ll be fine in those Ishapore bolt guns and if I have to push ‘em through the Springfield, well so be it.

As for .45ACP, well I’ve got 10 boxes of various bullets. Was trying to find the most accurate load. Now I figure, just get ‘em made. They’ll be accurate enough. I’m not going to use them for pistol matches anyway.

Mrs. L will soon be rolling in .44 Mag and Spl. I didn’t realize how much brass for her I had. About 1,700 between the two by my count. I stocked up on 210 grain Sierra’s back before things went crazy. It’s a nice pill that packs plenty of punch when sent through the tube by 9 grains of Bullseye.

Every time I look in that closet I find more components. Last night I found an entire sack full of .380 brass and lead round nose. I don’t even OWN a .380! LOL.

I guess being a pack rat and a scrounger has some advantages.

The last of the Reloader 12 will be gone by tomorrow, IMR 3031 too, probably. Next weekend we deplete the Bullseye and Unique.

Take care my friend. Check six.

“Without primers you have nothing.”

In 1775 guns were low tech enough someone could make the consumables without much trouble.

Today primers are impossible for most to make, and the remaining components (shells, jacketed bullets, powder) are almost as hard. “Reloading” is just final low-tech assembly of precision parts. Ergo the importance of having lots if finished ammo on hand.

Mrs L packing a 44 Mag ? I love her !....:o)

My niece packs a Charter Arms Bulldog Pug in 44 special ! She loves it, her CHL rig. I like to carry my 329PD when wheeling on the ATV’s ect as I carry it stuffed with 240gr JHP’s from buffalo bore for mountian kittiy cats and yogi but keep a few speed loaders full of 44 special for plinking.

Love the 44 special. Even own a SW 696 in 44 special ... Great all round caliber IMO.

BTW .... Snag some sabots from shotgun news adds. I can make .224 projectiles in my Corbin press from old .22 rimfire case and scrap lead. When I use a 30 cal sabot stuffed with my Corbin home rolled bullets it lets me use my 30 calibers be it bolt or magazine. Ran em thru a few of my rifles with great success if all ya can find is .224 diameters.

Also ya may want to try the .380 spares in yer nine if ya have one, both diameters are in .355 range, just 380 is less than 105 grains and 9mm is more than 105 grains.... Maybe ...might be useful ... Wouldn’t try 9’s Ina 380 though. But 380 bullets in a 9mm might be a paper punching load.

Off to run errands.,. Stay safe !

Keep in mind that the same fools that report nonsense like this have the same level of knowledge about ALL the other subjects they report on and are equally as accurate.

Believe it or not I don’t own a 9mm, either.

Mrs. L has two 44’s. (No jokes here, pal!) one is a 629 with a 6 inch barell. The other is a Taurus in .44 spl, titanium in blue. I picked up an old Charter Arms in .44 spl for $100 a few years back. I load the Spl rounds so they’re just about equivalent to a .45 ACP. 230 grain JHP moving at about 900 fps. That’s really an under rated personal defense cartridge IMO.

BTW if you’ve got a .40 cal I found a big pile of once fired cases I have no use for. Don’t own a .40. I’d be happy to ship them your way if you’d like. I’m pretty sure there is a couple of hundred at least in there. I could use the room in my closet. Otherwise I’ll toss them on one of the auction sites or something.

Best to you and yours,

L

Absolutely. TV station people write abominably. The point that struck me here, though, and I probably should have been more specific, is that when a writer puts something in quotation marks, the writer is stating that that is exactly what the source said, in those words.

If I were Mr. Dillard, I would be thoroughly pissed off. I’ll guess that his customers will give him a hard time about this for a while. “Hey, Jeff, got any bullet-heads for sale today?”

Where the hell has this CBS report been for the last year? Odumbo is the greatest guns salesman in history of the U.S. causing gun owners and others to stock up for the “big one” (just in case). Ammo has been in short supply for months with more “months” to come before a recovery. suddently this is news? Granted the shortage has primarily been due to gun owers not wanting to be caught short of ammo. The ammo makers are working around the clock to produce using the pre-shortage tooling and equipment.

“Be patient Grass-Hopper, ammo will once again be available by year end.”

One needs to buy in the good times and stock up Buy em cheap and stack em deep. I have close to 20,000 primers but also have a furnace with 45 acp and 9 mm molds so I am set for a few years if need be.

"Jeff Dillard who runs National Armory in Pompano says it’s the worst he’s ever seen...'All our vendors are telling us not only are they out of stock but some are two to three million bullet-heads in back-order.'"

"Bullet-heads?" There you have it, folks: the voice of degreed, licensed and approved leadership. Our nation is been increasingly feminized for decades. Business, politics and academia are now obviously administered with panic and hysteria. It's the end of the world, "bullet-heads," and our boss-women and he-shes don't know why. Those of you who couldn't fix a minor electrical problem or swap transmissions on your vehicles, shriek, and run for your lives.

;-)
