Conservatives Push Marijuana Reform in Congress
Rolling Stone ^ | 4-16-2013 | Tim Dickinson

There's a new congressional push to end the federal War on Pot in the states – and it's being spearheaded by some of the most conservative members of the Republican conference.

The "Respect State Marijuana Laws Act" introduced in the House last week would immunize anyone acting legally under state marijuana laws from federal prosecution under the Controlled Substances Act. Depending on the state, the legislation would cover both medical marijuana and recreational pot, and would protect not only the users of state-legal cannabis, but also the businesses that cultivate, process, distribute and sell marijuana in these states.

The legislation is in keeping with poll data released last week from Pew Research that found that 60 percent of Americans believe the feds should allow states to self-regulate when it comes to marijuana. The same poll finds that 57 percent of Republicans also favor this approach, which may explain why this bill is attracting arch-conservative backers in the House....

Good.

Time for the Feds to step away from this ill-advised, expensive, and fruitless “War on Pot”.

I’ll never use weed again, regardless of it’s legality, but to do so or not should be the decision of every American adult; not the feds.

These threads are always good ones. I agree that the Feds should let states decide their own policies on marijuana. If a state wants to keep it illegal and jail people for having it, fine. If a state wants to simply fine people for having it, fine. If a state wants to fully legalize it, fine. If the issue came up for a vote, I’d vote for legalization. No one has ever made a convincing argument to me that it is worse than drinking alcohol.

If you vote to legalize pot then you need to legalize all drugs.

Pretty much sums it up right there.

Alcohol is a much much more dangerous poison than marijuana.

Not that I'm against that - but why does one need to?

libertopians, liberdopians are not “conservative”

"The three GOP co-sponsors are:

"Rep. Dana Rohrabacher of California, who is best known to liberals as a villainous climate denier for theorizing that global warming is the result of "dinosaur flatulence."

"Rep. Don Young of Alaska, the mastermind of the infamous Bridge to Nowhere, who was most recently in the news for recalling the "wetbacks" his father employed on the family farm.

"And Rep. Justin Amash of Michigan, who was recently "purged" from the Republican House Budget Committee – allegedly for being too conservative – and who has repeatedly voted against toughening penalties for human trafficking."

Incest and pedophilia reform is next I guess

Unlike pot smoking, those crimes have unwilling victims.

The government can either tell us what we can put in our own bodies or they can’t. Saying that some drugs are ok and others are not is illogical.

Just the kind of bull crap headline you’d expect to find from Rolling Stone.

I disagree. We make judgment calls on issues all the time. Its never all or nothing. For instance, alcohol is a mind-altering chemical just like pot and other drugs. Just because alcohol is legal doesn't mean that other drugs are. If legalizing pot were up for a vote, I'd vote for it. If legalizing heroin was up for a vote, I'd vote against it.

Does the government have the power to tell us what we can put into our own bodies?

Yea, I can see how MJ is just the same as child rape.....eye roll.
The headline should be “conservatives push for states rights”.

It should, but they know if they make it about pot it will ring the bell that makes the dogs bark and prevent that conversation from happening.
