After months of fierce negotiations prior to President Xi Jinpings Moscow visit (March 22-24) China and Russian signed an agreement on supplying 24 Russian Su-35 fighter jets to China and for the joint construction of four Lada-class diesel submarines. The purchases are Chinas most significant from Russia in the past 10 years, the Interfax news agency reports, and are intended to provide a basis for future bilateral military cooperation.
[Editors Note: Su-35 is Russias most advanced 4th generation multipurpose fighter jet. The Lada-class submarine specializes in anti-submarine defense and conducting independent missions against enemy subs and ships in coastal, narrow and closed-sea areas. Yuriy Kormilitsinin, the Ladas designer, called it an underwater hunting craft capable of destroying any target.]
are they getting a good deal?
I hadn’t even gaught the existence of a Lada class.
Any Trabants?
I thought a Lada was a Soviet car. Are they sure they want these things?
A: Fill it with petrol.
The only Lada I ever saw was in Phnom Penh Cambodia during the war. A reminder of how the Russians were trying to suck up to the little Princeling King Sihanouk.
I’m sure the Khmer Rouge made good use of it as a cooking pot.
5 will get you 10 the Chinese take them apart and reverse engineer them then start making their own version
It’s kinda goofy that Russia is still selling weapons to China. They, by now, should be wayyy far ahead from what they’ve gotten from us and their own tech.
Hmmm... looks suspiciously like a Fiat to me!
In fact exterior (and interior) is fully indigenous. It is a “luxury” version of 1979 Riva sedan, which itself had it’s own styling.
Both are based on 1966 Fiat platform but their body panels are all-original.
VW bug and Toyota Corolla are competing for a title of the most produced model but this Lada actually beats them both if you are to consider a single unchanged design as a same car (Corolla and even Bug had a few generations).
They built some 22-24 million copies until 2010 or 2011 in Togliatti, Russia. They probably had two updates since late 1970s: EFI and new driving wheel. I think it still being made in Egypt under license.
I was just thinking they only need one. I’m shocked Russia hasn’t learned that yet.
Lada is still very valued in East Europe, 10 years old is worth 2,500 Euros....
