A large explosion rocked the town of West, Texas, 19 miles north of Waco, on Wednesday evening.

A source tells News 8 that a large swath of the small town with a population of 2,800 has been leveled.

According to initial reports, the blast was at the West Fertilizer plant at 1471 Jerry Mashek Drive, about a half-mile east of Interstate 35.

It’s horrible! I think they are preparing for another explosion! Evacuating the football field? That is where all the ambulances are!

Let’s just hope this was an accident.

In the America that I grew up in, my first (and probably only) reaction to an incident such as this would have indeed been accident. And that it very well may be. So says Occam's Razor. But, even without donning a tinfoil hat, it's increasingly hard to at least consider muzzie involvement. Their cunning evil knows no bounds and their actions throughout the world only serves to make them objects of suspicion.

Well, that goes without saying. Pearly gates either way, I should hope!

Abbott is about equidistant between Hillsboro to the north and West to the south. The two towns are about 7 miles apart.

Given there was a fire early in the day that was extinguished, but then flared up again, this screams accident.

I have a feeling that through all of this there were no evacuations could end up with someone in jail, though.

Great kolaches. Used to stop there everytime I travelled from Waco to Dallas.

It’s known as a Czech community.

If I get blown apart because someone screwed up at a fertilizer plant, I think I’ll feel about the same as I would if I was blown apart by a terrorist bomb.

Yes, you would.

But we'd feel differently depending on the root cause.

Our subsequent actions would be vastly different too.

I understand communities grow up around existing businesses, but scenes like this illustrate the stupidity of allowing a nursing home, school, residential area, or any other heavily populated buildings to be built near a fertilizer or chemical plant. City council - we need jobs and we need a tax base so let’s approve the placement of a nursing home next to a fertilizer plant. Solid zoning and urban planning on display here.

How in the world could such a business even get insurance? I am watching this in absolute amazement.... there was a fire at a fertilizer plant and the firemen rushed to the plant? Do they know anything about fertilizer?

Wow. Just wow. I am a Capitalist with a big “C” and I want every community to have jobs, nursing homes, schools, housing, and fertilizer plants. However, one of those things should not be in close proximity to the rest of that list.

Should we spend more money on preventing industrial explosions or terrorist explosions?

Split the difference between Waco and Texas City anniversaries.

Anniversary of the Great Texas City Explosion, 16April1947.

I hate myself for Monday morning quarterbacking here and prayers up for those affected. I am just stunned that they would allow a nursing home, school, and residences to be built close to such a plant.

Presuming that the plant pre-dates the other construction (which is probably likely).

But it's Texas - it's not like they don't have room to put the fertilizer plant another couple miles outside of town.

About the same. But I'd allow billions to avenge a terrorist act.

That's also a form of prevention.

On the Inhabitants of the Middle East

200 years from now, I want their children's children's children's children to cower and cringe in fear whenever they hear the sounds of jet engines overhead because their legends tell of fire from the sky.

I want them to hide in dark caves and holes in the earth, shivering with terror whenever they hear the roar of diesel engines because the tales of their ancestors talk about metal monsters crawling over the earth, spitting death and destruction.

I want their mothers to be able to admonish them with "If you don't behave, the Pale Destroyers will come for you", and that will be enough to reduce them to quivering obeisance.

I want the annihilation to be so complete that their mythology will tell them of the day of judgment when the stern gods from across the sea .. the powerful 'Mericans .. destroyed their forefathers' wickedness.

I know this town pretty well, broke down there in 1998, and the result was most unpleasant. It is heavily Czech.

It’s got to be bad. Scott and White Hospital, 30 miles south of Waco in Temple, is told to expect between 100 and 200 patients.
