I’ve seen steel balls sold as slingshot ammo.Available at Walmart and other places.

It more than likely had a cell phone or timer on it.

I tried a little research on the subject and found that the Pressure is used to confine the explosion until pressure builds up , making the eplosion much more powerful.

It has little to do with the pressure cooker itself exploding and more to do with the mechanics of building up pressure.

If I was so whaked that I’d even consider bombing people, who knows where I might buy pressure cookers?

I have a neighbor who sends to India for some cookware because it’s like the stuff Mom used. His mom, not mine.

“How would that jerk Chris Matthews feel if every time a mass killing took place, the MSM mussed it must be a ‘Catholic organization’ behind it... “

I don’t think they care. They say what they do because they are actors in a play pushing an agenda. Truth and logic does not matter, as long as the agenda is moved, that some listeners believe in the liberal Official Reality.

Even in the US, ballbearings are not easy to come by unless you visit a dump and go looking for them.

Or have a computer that can access eBay

-- Any pipe bomb works by containing the blast from a low explosive (e.g. gunpowder) ... --

Burned in the open, gunpowder doesn't blast. It's a bit like a sparkler. Faster than a sparkler, but no "blast." The only way to make gunpowder, even smokeless powder, go "boom" is to contain it so pressure builds. Under the high pressure condition, it burns faaaaast! and goes boom.

Your explanation is generally right. Just a nitpick about low explosive "blast," and pointing out there is no blast at all, unless the low explosive is contained.

Yep. The cooker itself is ductile. It won’t break into very many pieces unless it is purposely “scored” to do so.

I read it wasn’t ballbearings - it was BBs. They are very easy to come by.

“The most seriously injured children had BBs and nails embedded in their bodies, said Dr. David P. Mooney — objects that were apparently packed into the explosive devices.”

True - what’s your take on the posters who keep bringing up ‘McVeigh’ and OK city - while ignoring 9/11? It feels like some here are carrying liberal water...

“what’s your take on the posters who keep bringing up ‘McVeigh’ “

Probably just because it was a bombing.

Liberals are silent (probably ignorant) of the bomb Karl Armstrong touched off at Sterling Hall at UWisconsin, but he did his little masterpiece as a protest of Kent State and the Viet Nam war.

PRAYER FOR OUR COUNTRY

O my Jesus, You said, "verily I say to you, whatsoever you shall ask the Father in My name, He will give it to you."  Behold, in your name I humbly ask our Heavenly Father to protect every man, woman, and child in our great nation from those who want to delete your name from our society, i.e. on our money, in our courts, and in our schools.  Protect us from plans of destruction from which our enemies have plotted.

You, Heavenly Father, are the real foundation of our nation.  I thank you for making me a citizen of this land of freedom and unlimited opportunity...which are the results of its Christian base.

Please surround and protect us, and our military with Your love and mercy...in Jesus' name.
Amen

There were many failures of Bush and Congress after 9/11, but DHS was definitely one of the biggest. They are a massive agency with an ill-defined mission and the money spent on bloating them far beyond the size of the original agencies (border patrol might be the exception) into DHS would have been better saved or spent on existing agencies.

Maybe congress should reallocate most of their budget to immigration and naturalization and order them to close down other programs.

There is a picture of a piece of the pressure cooker.

Picture 3/6
The words “GAS ELECTRIC” on the outside circle
The words “NOX” on the inside circle

Picture 4/6
We can see the UL Listed mark.
We can see the pressure rating in part
“0.55/1.05 bar”
“?S 1.6 bar”

Picture 1/6
Being held by a hand.
The piece is approximately 4-5 hand widths (side facing about 3”) in diameter. So that makes it say 12-15” diameter pressure cooker.

With the actual parts in hand, they should have placed the specific make and model of the pressure cooker by now.

The UL standard for pressure cookers is UL 136. Here

RE> Even in the US, ballbearings are not easy to come by unless you visit a dump and go looking for them.

Do a Amazon search for ‘magnetix toys’. A few sets of these and you’ve got scores of fairly large ball bearings.

The bearings I saw photos of with regard to this event looked more like BBs.

Couldn’t they just buy some shotgun shells and use those pellets? Available in most any gage.

I recall reports of unexploded bombs including one located at a Church. Current news, however, is only mentioning the two that detonated. Only two in total?

Found this from yesterday's news:

"Law enforcement in the city said that they found what they believed were five additional, undetonated explosive devices around the Boston area."

Boston Marathon bomber planted SEVEN devices but only two went off: One ´suspect´ held, hunt

“From the amount and color of the smoke, and the orange flash, I’d wager strongly that the explosive was old-fashioned black powder, the nitrate, sulfur, charcoal mixture you can buy in up to 50 lb kegs from any good reloading store.

“You don’t need a blasting cap to detonate the stuff, a spark will do, and it has a faster burn rate than normal smokeless pistol and rifle powders. It deteriorates fairly quickly, (Short self life), and it’s highly hygroscopic.

I’m guessing a simple electrical timer wired to nichrome wire as an initiator.”

And attached to every pound of BP is a long paper trail (with the buyers name on it). Which makes me wonder if it was something else.

The paper trail is required and one of the dealers in Houston lost his FFL because he was missing the paperwork on a small amount of BP.

I am sure they know what the explosive was by now and if it was BP every dealer in the area is being audited.

Although the bp lights off faster than modern powder it is nowhwere near as fast as modern powder. Much of burns as it is pushed out the end of the barrel.
