The two bombs that killed three people and injured at least 176 at the Boston Marathon on Monday were made from six-liter pressure cookers crammed with shards of metal, nails and ball bearings and stashed in black backpacks, police sources revealed today.
The cruelly-designed bombs have 'frequently' been used in Afghanistan, India, Nepal and Pakistan, according to a 2010 Homeland Security Department pamphlet - hinting at the origins of the bombers behind the worst terrorist atrocity in the U.S. since 9/11.

Whoever did this may have been trained in Afghanistan, but is not necessarily Afghan.

American MSM is going to hold off on reporting this because they can’t figure out how to keep up the “TEA Party is behind this” narrative at the same time that they’re reporting that this type of bomb is used in Afghanistan.
Looks like the work of an motivated, diligent but unskilled amateur based on al Qaeda cookbooks. A pro can simply drive up to any skyscraper in a McVeigh-style U-Haul with fuel-oil explosives, park, detonate the bomb with a cell phone call and kill hundreds, if not thousands, depending on the amount of destruction wreaked on the building.

It’s the same premise as Claymore mines. If you want to cause large amounts of maiming besides the blast, you add things that will turn into shrapnel.
All it proves is somebody is really sick and wanted to kill and incapacitate as many people as possible.

We can’t put too much into the use of shrapnel. Form follows function, so any man-portable bomb intended to cause mass casualties is going to have shrapnel.
The pressure cooker angle is more interesting. That is getting into the tradecraft, and it isn’t something that I think the average basement mad bomber would reach for first as a vessel. Selection of firing train components, initiating mechanism, etc., all tend to form a sort of ‘signature’ of a bomber. Once they find a formula that works for them, they tend to stick with it, making incremental, evolutionary changes to the design.
OTOH this knowledge is passed on, nowadays through web pages and forums that almost anybody may have access to and so elements of the design could be copied by people far removed geographically and ideologically from the original bomb builder. I have no doubt that Timothy McVeigh’s design was inspired by, copied from or directly taught to him by middle eastern devices. The tamping to direct the blast, etc. was an indicator for me.
Let us not forget the trips that his alleged co-conspirator Terry Nichols took to the Philippines. It may not have been (just) for sexual tourism. He may have made contact with JI types who taught him the ropes. I don’t know that angle was ever explored in the investigation because it ran counter to the Clinton administration’s meme that Rush Limbaugh was responsible.
I wonder what "President" Hussein learned, when he was in Pakistan as a young man.
