ABC News: Support for Gun Checks Stays High; Two-Thirds Back a Path for Immigrants
ABC News ^ | 04/16/2013 | Gary Langer

Support for a process providing legal status to undocumented immigrants reached a new high in the latest ABC News/Washington Post poll, while vast public backing for expanded background checks on gun sales held strong – two prominent issues coming to the fore in Congress.

With a vote on gun control measures pending, 86 percent support extending background checks to gun sales at gun shows and online. Much smaller majorities support banning assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, 56 percent in each case, with the latter down from its peak, 65 percent in January, a month after the elementary school shootings in Newtown, Conn.

See PDF with full results and charts here.

A broad 72 percent back another proposal, prohibiting lawsuits against legal gun sellers if the weapon later is used in a crime.

More generally, the public by 55-38 percent rejects the concept that any new gun control laws by definition limit gun rights, and by 52-40 percent says a higher priority now should be enacting new laws to try to reduce gun violence, rather than protecting the right to own guns.

Still, another result reflects a gain across past decade in positive attitudes toward guns: By 51-29 percent, Americans in this poll, produced for ABC by Langer Research Associates, think having a gun in the home makes it a safer place, not more dangerous. (Sixteen percent say it depends.) When Gallup first asked this question in September 2000, the reverse held: Fifty-one percent said guns made homes more dangerous, 35 percent safer.

At the same time, in an eye-opening result, 30 percent say they, a close friend or a family member have been a victim of a crime involving a gun. That, however, does not appear to strongly impact other gun-related attitudes, while views on whether guns make a home safer do.

IMMIGRATION – On immigration, Americans by nearly 2-1, 63-33 percent, support a program giving undocumented immigrants a path to legal status. That reflects a sharp change in the past five years, from essentially an even split on the issue, 49-46 percent, in late 2007. (Another question, posing a “path to citizenship,” found 57 percent support late last month.)

Meanwhile the IQs of 53% of Americans are lower than a pile of cow dung.

I’d like to know the exact questions asked
and I’d like to know the demos of the respondents

a path to legal status is NOT citizenship

thanks for taking the time to post the poll

"...while vast public backing for expanded background checks on gun sales held strong..."

That kind of rhetoric in presentations of surveys from improper methodologies only continues to prove that queers favor controls against civil rights like the Second Amendment.

Yes. Let's trade freedom for an illusion of "safety."

Gawd, so many Americans have become such idiots. And some of us here in FReeperland think the public will someday "see the light" about Obama.

I don't believe this *data*.

If ABC reports or prints something the truth is no where near.

Well gee, they ought to get Harry Reid on speed dial because ol' Harry can't seem to gin up enough votes to pass his "Second Amendment Reform" bill.

Maybe if ABC let him know that the American People are just itching to give away their right to self-defense, he might be able to loose that nasty Corbomite Maneuver Puppet Guy face he always wears.

... And the poll also found that 72% support adopting communism and giving all their property to the state. It is also found that 72% agreed that Obama should be made permanent president. In another question 72% supported establishing indoctrination camps for conservatives.

damage control polling.

BTW anyone notice north korea dropped off the radar?

Reid does not have the votes and so he was going to delay anyways.

Immigration is the SAME AMNESTY as before.

Rubio was used as a willing useful idiot.

“IMMIGRATION – On immigration, Americans by nearly 2-1, 63-33 percent, support a program giving undocumented immigrants a path to legal status”

It’s a lie. What did they ask...’would you rather make them legal or kill them all??’ Heck, there are not that big a percentage of aliens that even want citizenship! Only about 40% of the 86 amnesty have bothered! BUT the minute these aliens are ‘legalized’ to stay here, they can vote in local elections in many areas of the country.

ALL decent polling tells us just the opposite! Most luddites out there have no idea that the border isn’t secure or that there are millions of illegal alien criminals....and they SURE don’t know that the new Rubio/Conda/Norquist/SPLC plan will allow deported aliens to come back!!!

"Americans" must have come up with an idea of how to pay for ObamaCare for 30-40 million foreign nationals. Good luck with that.

I've yet to hear one person tell me, "Gee, I really hope Congress can pass this 'immigration' thing. What America needs is more people living and looking for jobs here."

Funny how 53 and 47 magically equal 100 and it’s the numbers used in politics constantly. Me smells something funny about this...

Interesting, then, that the pimps and whores who infest the Capitol, and who can calculate the price of their votes in their sleep, are having trouble getting even 60 votes in the Senate, never mind 218 in the House.

Perhaps the "poll" is not entirely on the up-and-up?
