Another Missile Defense Sellout — This Time To China

National Security: Our secretary of state tells the Chinese we'll restrain missile defense activities in Asia in exchange for their help in reducing the threat of a nuclear North Korea. Isn't this where we came in?

In a news conference after meetings with China's top leaders on Saturday, Secretary of State John Kerry said the United States would reduce its missile defenses in Asia if North Korea abandoned its nuclear weapons program. Well, at least he didn't bow.

In response to North Korea's threat to fire some of its latest missiles, including the road-mobile Musudan, amidst news that it can now or will soon arm these missiles with sufficiently miniaturized warheads, the U.S sent additional missile defense assets to the region.

This included the deployment of two destroyers equipped with Aegis missile defense systems, the Decatur and the John McCain, as well as a second TPY-2 phased-array X-band long-range missile defense radar system to Japan.

China objects to these moves, saying that our decision to deploy these assets risked deepening regional tensions. What it means is that additional missile defenses in Asia threaten its efforts to intimidate Japan with which it has ongoing territorial disputes, and its targeting of Taiwan with a potential missile barrage in the event it moves one day to recapture what it claims as a lost province.

"On missile defense, we discussed absolutely why we have taken the steps that we have taken," Kerry said.

"Now obviously if the threat disappears — i.e. North Korea denuclearizes — the same imperative does not exist at that point of time for us to have that kind of robust forward leaning posture of defense,'' he added.

If China and North Korea have nuclear weapons, thats one thing. If Japan and South Korea seek nuclear weapons in response, or if we deploy missile defenses into the region, we risk deepening regional tensions.

If the baddies have them, no issue. If the good guys have them, or can at least defend against them, that is dangerously destabilizing.

what do they mean “this time to China”?

Loral and Hughes and Clintoon did the same thing in the 90’s, and also to China.

I don’t know if anyone in Washington or Beijing is thinking this far ahead, but this crisis, inevitably, is going to strengthen the voices in Tokyo that are calling for Japan to fully rearm, modify Article 9 of the Japanese constitution, and develop strategic weapons.

of course, when I say “develop”, I really mean “assemble”, because you would have to be a particular kind of stupid if you don’t think that Japan has already modeled, designed, pre-fabricated and tested a variety of components that can be “hey-lookie-here” snapped together to make a working nuclear device.

It’s not like they need to go hunting for anything. They have all the necessary technology and approximately 46 tons of plutonium already.

The Democrats sure have come a long way since President Kennedy.

President Obama should have made the following statement:

It shall be the policy of this nation to regard any nuclear missile launched from North Korea against any free nation as an attack by China on the United States, requiring a full retaliatory response upon China.
