Transcript: Prologue. Ira Glass

Harper High School, South Side of Chicago. First day of school this year, first thing in the morning, everybody gathers in the gym for a beginning of the year assembly. The school's principle, Leonetta Sanders, is at the mic. Principal Sanders

I need us to begin to quiet down. Ira Glass

Sitting all together in a group are the freshman, looking the way that freshman do on the first day of school, like they barely know who they are. Principal Sanders

The class of 2016. Where you at? The class of 2016, where you at? Ira Glass

Down in front, sitting together, are the seniors, looking the way seniors do on the first day of school. Principal Sanders

And then my babies are here. My class of 2013! Where you at?

/snip/

Principal Sanders

Last year was a difficult year for most of us, for all of us in the Harper community. You know, and the freshmen may not know. But we lost three students last year. Ira Glass

This is actually underplaying the bad news. Last year, 21 kids, current and recent Harper students, were wounded by gunshots. Five recent students died. And that is all on top of the three current students that Ms. Sanders mentioned. Total-- 29 shot. Eight of them dead. /snip/

Last year, the number of murders in Chicago rose, while in many other big cities, like New York and Los Angeles, it held steady or fell. It was 506 dead in Chicago last year. But of course, these deaths aren't evenly distributed all over the city. The majority are in a handful of neighborhoods, like this one. This is Englewood. Police statistics show that it is one of the most dangerous areas of the city.

A mini Columbine and no national news?

Virgina Tech?

No one cares, why?

This stuff is out of control. It is chaos.

Stop and Frisk? It can save hundreds of lives. Most of the Chicago violence is in a small section of the city. Yet Rahm and the Keystone Kops can't figure it out.

Giuliani, Bloomberg, Bratton - have saved thousands of young black lives, put them in charge!

The media doesn’t care of blacks and Latinos murder each other, only if white people are on the trigger.

Liberals always think its their job to make the children into their image.

Where you at?

They're obviously not in English class, just like you weren't.

So what would Moochelle and O say if everyone in Englewood wanted to move to Hyde Park? Would they keep their home in Hyde Park???

C’mon, Bob. You’ve got to cut her some slack, now. She’s only the principal of the school.

BTW, did you notice that whoever wrote the transcript says that she is “the school’s principle”?

The school’s principle what? Principle education preventer? Principle bad example?

Truer words have never been spoken in 2013.

An interesting article. Farther down, they talk about gangs and how with the fragmenting of gangs after the busts of the Gangsta Disciple leadership, just about every block has its own gang, and if you live there, you belong - no choice about that.

That’s a lot of Ira Glass quotes right there.

Wow, take it easy. Obviously the phrase means the same thing as, "Where you be?"
