National Rifle Association President David Keene said Tuesday that the organization intends to challenge the constitutionality of Maryland's newly passed gun law, as a conservative group readied plans to try to overturn the law through voter referendum.
Keene said during a radio interview the group will absolutely go to the courts.
We are already in court in New York and we will be in court and aiding those in Maryland and I am myself a Maryland resident who want to challenge the constitutionality of this and other provisions here in Maryland, Keene said to the Washington, D.C., station WTOP.
The gun bill approved by the General Assembly last week bans the sale of 45 types of military-style semi-automatic rifles, among other strict provisions. Keene said it is unconstitutional to ban firearms in common use and that the AR-15 is nation's best-selling rifle.
Meanwhile, a group that successfully petitioned three Maryland laws to referendum last year plans to submit to the state Board of Elections on Wednesday a proposal to put the gun law before voters.
Republican Del. Neil Parrott, founder of mdpetitions.com, said that while the group has not formally decided to fight the law at the ballot box, it hopes to have a petition ready by next week as a preliminary step. The group would need to gather 55,736 signatures to put an issue on the November 2014 ballot.
The gun law, which Gov. Martin O'Malley plans to sign during a ceremony in May, also limits magazines to 10 bullets and requires a license to buy a handgun. OMalley told reporters Monday that he expected some of his agenda to be placed before voters.
You cant fear that, OMalley said of the referendum threat. The people of our state are smart and they are fair....

Now, you know why I’ve been a proud NRA member since 1976.
That is good that they are challenging it, but don’t expect much help from the courts. If you haven’t noticed, legitmate gun owners have become the Jew in the 1030s Germany. Christians are next on the list. they are already laying the groundwork.
We here in the People's Republic of Maryland welcome this court battle. It's a sad state of affairs when you must resort to this.
During the senate hearing here in MD, there were thousands of pro 2A people that showed up in Annapolis ... but the media always grabbed one of the half-dozen anti 2A zealots and put them on camera.
"Common use" and "best selling" is now the criteria?
I'll stick with the "shall not be infringed" part.
NRA needs to challenge NY, Colorado, Connecticut, Mass., and other other “principality” which thinks it can infringe on our unalienable rights.
You cant fear that, OMalley said of the referendum threat. The people of our state are smart and they are fair....
Meaning that they are communists and low-info voters.
Maryland "Freak State" PING!
maybe they can challenge the rain tax too..
Great news!
Great News. Ues we have had 3 other bills go to referendum and we lost on all 3 of them, That is why we will try once again by petition, but we also must go to court.
Maryland is filled with liberal refugees from the ghettos of Washington who moved out here to screw up our state, Also Baltimore and its liberal northern yankee liberal part of Maryland which elected this A-hole O’Mally to start with.
The cities and a couple of high residence copunties rule our State an have fugged it up to a fare thee well. Same sex marriage , an 83% increase in gas taxes, and the prick O’malley and his a-hole buddies just passed a friggin rain tax.
YES folks a Rain tax. on top of a flush tax for using my own septic system
We get screwed here every day and it’s time it stopped.
Look for the new laws to land up in the courts.
I’d love to file an amicus brief!
I’m in.
