Nope. And it's not even true. In 1992 or so Element Lad was in "love" with transgendered Shvaughn Erin http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shvaughn_Erin But they have to come out with this crap every few years. They declare it "groundbreaking" and "unique" though it's the same old boring crap.
Really ticks be off is they did it to the original Green Lantern.

Not a big fan of comics, but I love fantasy. Same basic idea if things that are completely imaginary and could never happen, but tend to be quite conservative in beliefs.
Sword of truth series was great- the whole series was the heroes trying to fight for the rights of individual over “greater good.”
If I want to read, give me a book that has a good message and doesn’t rely on pictures.

Read through the comments. If you were never a fan of comics, than this is a non-story for you. I grew up reading comics. Marvel comics were my favorites. Reason being - with Superman (DC) you had the most powerful being given a hard time by simple men. Even to a kid, it was somewhat unbelievable. With Marvel, you had the super heroes battle someone who could destroy planets. The villians were equal in power if not more powerful than the heroes. Sometimes the hero lost. Sometimes the hero won but received a major arse kicking in the process.

Here is irony for you. Back in the early 60's there was a stand alone Human Torch story where he battled against a Socialist leaning villian causing rabble-rousing havoc. The villian at the end turned out to be a newspaper publisher. The story was written by - ta do - Stan Lee. I guess they write so much over the years and get lost in the indoctrination, they tend to forget the basics - good over evil. Socialism - evil; American way of life - at the time - good.

Learned alot about good and evil at the time, especially from Captain America. Loved it when he was beating up the Red Skull and at the same time explaining the goodness and rightousness of the United States. Now there are way too many leftists/Marxists in the ranks. They all have to make thier mark by shattering the boundries.

And what is really a shame is they take characters from the past and transform them into something to fit todays culture. Why make Green Lantern gay? Why make the Rawhide Kid gay? You want a LGBT character? Fine. Than create one but don't take an established character and change it. And in a sense they are cowards. If you really want to be edgey, than make one of the big ones gay or whatever deviant of the time this sick culture is championing. But that would be too much of a backlash.

Why pervert the comic heroes of yesteryear? Because they'd never get the new characters off the ground. This way they can get gramma to spring for the book at the register relying on the superhero's former reputation.

Having some openly GiBLeT character bomb at the newsstand would be embarassing--and expose the homonazi movement as not being so strongly backed as it claims.

So you like fantasy; do you read Terry Pratchett? If so, how much do you think JK Rowling 'borrowed' from him?

Never heard of Sword of Truth, I'll look into it. I like books that take a great idea and turn it into a great story, usually flawed heroes and if it's science fiction which I really like, they don't waste my time with some phantasmagorical technology and neglect the story, or neglect developing the universe the story is set in or even simple character development.

One series that I think typifies great sci-fi is the Dune series from Frank Herbert. Although if you read the six original books in a row, it's clear he never went back and read the books leading up to the next sequel. His characters change roles and abilities without a reason between books which probably means he was lazy and didn't want to re-read his previous books. If you liked the first six by Frank Herbert, his son supposedly found notes on the rest of the series in a safety deposit box and got a co-writer to flesh them out. While the writing is way below the originals, it does move the story forward.

One thing I've always loved reading is Greek/Roman mythology. Or Homer's Iliad and the Odyssey. Although in the Odyssey, I could have walked from Troy to Ithaca in ten years.

I'm afraid with texting and people incorporating gangsta terminology into our Lexicon (bling for example) we're losing our language and if you read great 20th century writing or even earlier like Mark Twain. Writers like Steinbeck (although you want to commit suicide after reading some of his books). "Tell me again about the rabbits George". We're just not getting anything other than formulaic writing. It's like they have a chart with types of scenarios, types of characters, types of conflicts and then pick something from each column and write the book.

Or writers with great ideas like Ayn Rand even though she lacked in the actual technical part of writing. Even Robert Ludlam if you like spy novels although I think he might have given up and just turned some of his books into chase novels. The last Bourne book is a good example of that.

I honestly can't name a great modern writer off the top of my head.

One thing I've never gotten into much is what is considered to be great Russian literature. I forget the book but I think I was a quarter of the way through it before I realized they didn't have four characters, the character had four names and there seemed to be no rhyme or reason why they used one name over another.
