STORY HIGHLIGHTS Joseph and Summer McStay and their two children haven't been seen since 2010 The FBI is taking over the investigation from San Diego County authorities The family's abandoned SUV was found near the Mexican border A surveillance video shows what appears to be them crossing the border
(CNN) -- The family -- mom, dad and two kids -- left their home looking like they meant to be back in a few minutes. But surveillance video caught what appears to be the four of them walking across the border into Mexico. There's been no word of them since.
Now the investigation into the disappearance of the Southern California family in 2010 is being taken over by the FBI, authorities in California announced.
Since Joseph McStay, his wife, Summer, and their two young children, Gianni, and Joseph Mateo, vanished more than three years ago, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department has been leading the search.
"Due to the fact that the family is believed to be out of the country, and because minor children are involved, the primary investigative responsibility for the case is being transferred to the FBI," Lt. Glenn Giannantonio of the San Diego County's department said in a prepared statement Tuesday.

California looking for the payment of their proposed “Exit Tax”????
It sounds like they may have gone “Gault.” I think the headline should read. “The Mcstay familly just up and Mcleft the country.”
This story was on one of the reality shows.....probably “Investigation Discovery” but I don’t remember.
There was something ‘shady’ about the wife. She had changed her name or some such and was originally from Mexico. The FBI should look in that direction.
On a more serious note, I pray that they are safe wherever they are.
Maybe they wanted to get away from a crazy relative?
Sounds like they did this intentionally.
But since the state owns the kids, I guess the stare wants to get them back
Four Americans walk into Mexico never to return and it's *WHOOP!* *WHOOP!* CALL OUT THE FBI!
My wife also changed her name over fifty years ago.
If they went freely, sure sounds like they did something awfully bad and skipped town.
“My wife also changed her name over fifty years ago.”
Cool! But the woman in this story changed her name prior to her marriage. She was, if I remember correctly, an illegal immigrant. That was the reason for her name change.
Probably about taxes. If you leave the country, the U.S. government still wants you to pay taxes, unless you give up citizenship. However, they don't give a crap about collecting taxes from millions of illegals coming here. Turning into a socialist country, turn over your money and property and we might let you citizens leave.
Only after suffering through the red tape and paperwork of their emigration process, being brow-beaten the whole way and threatened with being denounced as an undesirable dissident did they (maybe) finally acquiesce and give you an exit visa. Everyone else was made a 'Refusenik' who would never be allowed to leave. Maybe you'd be allowed to leave, but not your family because the Soviet Union just cannot allow your reckless and selfish decision to negatively affect your wife and kids. The state has deep affection and love for them still, don't you know, even if YOU don't care for their welfare, you ungrateful tool of the capitalist degenerates.
Basically, you're born a criminal with debt to pay off that already takes your whole life to settle with the state.
Give it thirty years or fifty years and Obamacare will cause the same thing to happen here. Oh, they'll roll their eyes and laugh today if you prophecize this, but everyone who mocks the notion today will be long gone by then.
It is weird. They left their money, their belongings, uneaten food in the kitchen. If I were going Gault, I would at least withdraw my money from the bank.
I had the displeasure of working with the FBI during the eco-fascist bombings of various college natural resources departments in the 1990s.
As a class, I have never met a more stupid clan of morons, imbeciles and traitors as I did among the FBI. If God hurled a meteor on the FBI and wiped them out, He would have done the world a favor.
I went to the gym, this story was playing on the tv, I got transfixed and ended up watching the whole thing and not working out.
It is not a simple case.
Some say oh, they took the money and ran. No. There were tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars left behind.
Also, they were very affectionate with their dogs, one of which was a recently obtained puppy. Those dogs were left abandoned in the back yard. If they wanted to pretend to have been abducted they could have left the front door open or something. But no. The poor dogs were just out in the backyard, no food, no water.
They had no known drug, criminal, or debt trouble.
The man had a very successful business. He had just had a business meeting that day. His last call was to follow up on it. Why bother if you are planning to disappear?
Also there seemed to be genuine love and connections between family members and friends, none of whom have a clue as to where they are.
Yet they disappeared. The abandoned car had no other prints in it save their own. It wasn’t “wiped” in that sense. Why would no bad guys’ prints be in the abandoned vehicle? What would the bad guys have to gain? Why would bad guys go after an entire family, including 2 little kids who could not have been witnesses?
So perplexing.
“Four Americans walk into Mexico never to return and it’s *WHOOP!* *WHOOP!* CALL OUT THE FBI! “
Their family, friends, and business associates are frantic. They think they have been abducted/killed.
How do you know that their venture into Mexico wasn't pre-planned? Maybe they don't want to be brought home.......
This one is weird. The dogs, the house, the money. Doesn’t add up.
And the wife was very against going to Mexico.
This ploy obviously worked. It kept the FBI away for nearly three years.
