Responding to a recent spate of trigger-happy cops blowing away the family pet under questionable circumstances, the Colorado Senate passed a bill on Tuesday requiring law enforcement officers be trained to recognize when they’re truly being threatened by an aggressive dog and not simply one that’s frightened or playful.

Makes sense, especially when it comes to pit bulls and rottweilers. Not all dogs are vicious, and in most cases (at least in my experience) they generally are posing and are not really a viable threat, if one just moves slow and takes their time.

I’m very glad to see this. Not sure that bill itself will do any good, but this put LEO’s on notice that the shooting of pets has come to the attention of the legislature. Think of it as a warning shot across their bow.
