Two key senators have reached a deal to expand background checks to firearms sales at gun shows and on the Internet, sources close to the negotiations said early Wednesday.
Sen. Pat Toomey, a conservative Pennsylvania Republican, plan to announce the deal Wednesday with West Virginia Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin, who holds an A rating from the National Rifle Association.
The two have been working on a compromise proposal that could draw Republican support for expanding background checks. On Tuesday evening, the two had an agreement in principle, and spent the night hammering out the final details.

Maybe in 1994 but PA has changed to left much since then (they are moving West) and in 2004 they booted Santorum ~ 10 years ago. Its pretty liberal now as Obama’s victory gives evidence.
More than that it may look like the filibuster team didnt do their job to court enough others in the Senate GOP to join them, maybe pre-emptively declaring they will filibuster any bill no matter whats in it wasnt the greatest idea for stopping this.
I want to see whats in the bill. I want to see how Dems react to it.
The Bill does not allow the govt to keep records, only dealers. The Bill would apply only to gun sales through “paid advertisements”, not “Friends or neighbors”.
Even if the filibuster worked, Reid was going to circumvent it. I cannot see liberal dems supporting the Manchin Bill without amendments, amendments that would expose redstate Dems to problems, and in the end, kill the Bill. It is a lose-lose for the Dems.
Well, instead of buying guns that are going to be confiscated and their use criminalized — they should be buying pitchforks and heading for the streets.
That's until Obama declares a “State of Emergency” and then signs an Executive Order forcing ALL gun sellers to turn over their records, including from gun shows.
and when a dealer closes the federal government takes over the records.
The beltway thinks citizens are really stupid.

The purpose of Pat Toomey is to make Rick Santorum look better and better.
PA is still staunchly pro-gun. Santorum got booted because he got too Beltway-tized. Looks like Toomey is on his way to that condition as well.
They will. The NRA was turned, so will the GOA be someday.
Is there a link to the bill, or a bill number?
All I needed to know about Pat Toomey I learned the night of the Rand Paul filibuster. While other R Senators took their turn at microphone giving long, drawn out, anecdotal questions that went on and on (giving Sen. Paul a breather) my “conservative” Senator, Pat Toomey, hurried thru what seemed to less than a one minute query—so quick was his question that when the camera went back on Rand Paul he looked stunned (like, “come on...that’s all you got?).
I pointed that out on the live FR thread (gee, he seems awfully hurried!) when it was revealed that Turncoat Toomey was one of the Senators “dining w/Soetaro” that night...and that he was rushing for his “date” a few of PA FReepers were slammed for challenging Toomey’s trustworthiness BECAUSE Toomey has the highest conservative rating in the Senate, blah blah blah.
So Toomey’s “high conservative rating” means about as much as Manchin’s “NRA A rating.” NOTHING!!! As they both are writing legislation supporting exactly what they both have been endorsed to support.
Maybe after another “romantic dinner with Dear Leader these two heavily “endorsed” Senators can get together and finish off the coal industry
Well I just watched their little presser and the bill they want to pass basically is nothing more than what we already have in place. Unless there is a little paragraph in there they are not telling us about.
Internet sales already require a background check as do gun show sales so maybe they are doing this just to shut the left up. If so I will also shut up. I’m still waiting to hear what Rand Paul and Ted Cruz say about it.
Yes it is. But even our side get's it wrong. My right to bear arms isn't GIVEN to me by the 2nd Amendment. The right to protect myself, my family and my liberties are those inalienable rights. The 2nd Amendment is a restriction on government. We need to force the re-framing of the discussion.
“...no one reads anything I have to say...”
I wouldn’t say that.
I’m reading it....and be sure that others are too.
I think what it comes down to is that people are just frustrated and freaked right now about all of the power grabs these arschlochs in DC are attempting...and they’re simply venting.
Let’s see what this “compromise” is first... then go into Plan A, B, or C mode as necessary.
Guy from Judicial Watch was on the radio this morning, saying basically that whatever Fed level gun control is introduced, it will be DOA in the House.
The State level is the real threat; they’re distracting us with the Fed crap while going hardcore through the States (NJ, NY, CT, CO, etc.).
I don’t want crazies or criminals owning guns but I don’t want the government having a registry of all gun owners which is what background checks amount to. Moreover, since criminals and crazies will find a way to get a gun regardless of the background checks — i.e., they’ll just steal one from somebody — the expansion of background checks upon more law-abiding Americans is just another creeping step of Big Brother into our lives.
I heard Manchin and turncoat Toomey give their press conference. Manchin said any person that had been “adjudicated” as having a mental problem will be denied
a gun if they try and buy one. What in the the hell is that supposed to mean? Any veteran that fought for his country and is now suffering from any mental disorder will be denied the right to protect himself and his family??? Any veteran that the Veteran’s Administration says has PTSD will now be monitored and tracked like he’s a damn criminal. This is BS of the first degree. Hell no to any law that says a veteran can not own a weapon. These worthless politicians, most of which never served a day in the defense of this country, now telling real patriots they are not trusted with a weapon and will be treated like a common criminal? The worthless bastards, every damn one of them.
