"persistent poverty and social troubles among many black communities"

The "black communities" part is the root of the problem. I have met people who cared about the "white community", and they disgust me. There is no way in the world I would live near a "white community". I live in a community of successful, hard-working people. My black neighbors have the same race friends as I do, over half white, and nearly 1/3 Asian, and they're only black in skin color not in culture, same for their kids. I don't think it's possible to succeed if you have a built in excuse for failure and you look down on hard work as "acting white". It's time to move past race and "diversity" and just look at the content of a person's character, not the color of their skin, if we want everyone to have a chance to succeed.

No worries - the President will be riding in on his chopper to save the day...I hear he has a smart guy that will address the issues...

Justice Thomas needs to not worry about his validation if that could be apart of his hurtful deep feelings. Millions of Americans respect him and others like him. He is a good man. The people who have worked to destroy him are filled with hatred as they have done wrongs to other nominees over the past as well. Those who show no good quality, nor win by honor, can not claim a victory. I know it must be hard for him at times, and if I lived among the pillars of D.C., I would long for being away from there myself. God Bless Justice Thomas and to keep him safe and strong.

Name one majority black city or portion of a city that does not have elevated crime rates, a lower standard of living, and lesser academic success among students. Not all the cultures or politics in these various cities are similar, yet the results tend to be.

How about we start by recognizing what MLK wanted us to - that skin color doesn't matter? When LBJ and the Democrats successfully entrenched the majority of the black community under the Democrat ‘umbrella’, they did a very grave injustice. First, that type of approach undercuts the fact that the black community, like all communities, is not monolithic but is diverse and made up of individuals. The Democrats have pushed blacks away from their rich individuality and expect them to be like-voting automatons. Any black who strays from this is targeted.

Second, instead of featuring the successes of individual blacks in the private sector, the Democrats feature only black politicians who ‘preach’ the Democrat message that blacks need them to survive. That is unadulterated b.s., and extremely harmful to a community that should at this point in their history be living the American dream based on the richness of their talents and their efforts.

Many black communities in decline

If he is talking about the black subculture of the American culture, beyond the destructive chaos wroght by the Great Society, where isn't it in decline? Same with most or all other subcultures.

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas said Tuesday he is heartbroken over the persistent poverty and social troubles among many black communities but has no answers on how to solve these problems.

It's the socialism/collectivism/community/village/gang/criminal/thug/rapist/looter/murderer/thief/plunderer, stupid.

They're all part of the same virulent strain of anti-truth, anti-freedom, anti-individual, anti-life evil.

Get out from under the robe, justice.

If they just stick with the Democrats for another 100 years things should be much better.

It’s a good thing blacks are not responsible for themselves.

Could the black community have a problem with RESPONSIBILITY?

Gee, I’ll take a wild guess that that word is not spoken or taught in these poor downtrodden ghettos of government welfare fraud.

They “made their bed and now lay down in it to sleep” as the old saying goes.

The black (and brown) “poor” communities have gone far past the “Rubicon” in the pursuit of personal responsibility and will never return to a productive and responsible society.

As more and more government action is taken to “protect” this class of people, they will eat and breed to the point that the majority of our population will live off the hard work of the responsible.
