How much does the Obama budget matter? Look at the last one

Ahead of Wednesday’s release of the Obama administration’s budget for fiscal 2014, a fair question can be raised: how much does it matter, given that Republicans hold the House in any event? Here’s a look at how much of the administration’s last budget matched up with what the U.S. actually is due to spend in the current, September-ending fiscal year.

Before the budget cuts under the so-called sequester are tallied, both congressionally approved discretionary spending — as opposed to mandatory spending on entitlements — and the president’s original discretionary request match each other. The key difference is the details of where the money goes.
