12 GOP senators back Rand Paul on gun-control filibuster
POLITICO ^ | JONATHAN ALLEN

Posted on 04/06/2013 7:26:07 AM PDT by JohnPDuncan

Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul’s threat to filibuster any new gun restrictions is gathering steam, as a dozen of his Republican colleagues have now signed onto his plan.

The Kentucky Republican and Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Mike Lee (R-Utah) first wrote to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid late last month to warn him of their intention to try to tie up the Senate if, as planned, Reid moved forward with legislation that would expand background checks and attempt to crack down on interstate gun trafficking.

Reid is expected to bring a gun-control bill to the floor as early as next week, or perhaps the following week, and Paul is renewing his vow to try to block the measure. Paul’s follow-up letter, obtained by POLITICO, bears Monday’s date and is signed by 13 Republicans, including fellow potential 2016 presidential aspirant Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) — who signed on shortly after Paul’s first threat was issued — and National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman Jerry Moran of Kansas.

While Paul gained a new measure of fame among libertarian-minded voters on the right and left during a recent filibuster sparked by the administration’s policy of targeted drone strikes, Reid has an ace in the hole. A new Senate rule would allow him to circumvent a filibuster on the motion to proceed to the gun bill by promising each party two amendments on the legislation. Under that scenario, Paul and his allies would still get a chance to raise their objections on the floor for hours on end, but they couldn’t stop the Senate from starting debate on the bill.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) has said he won’t support a filibuster if Reid promises to allow for amendments on the floor.

Can’t they just end the fillibuster if they have 60 votes? Seriously, all 13 will probably have to go to the bathroom at the same time and it will end after 12 hours, and then Rand will vote for the gun bill. Isn’t this what he did during his Chuck Hagel nomination?

The Newtown parents will be on full display tonight on 60 minutes. It wasn’t enough for them to promote a gun free zone at their school, and for Connecticut to pass sweeping gun laws. No, now they have to go on 60 Minutes and pull on heartstrings so that all of the U.S. gives up their guns. Do they not realize that the criminals will keep theirs?

They need 41 votes to sustain it. Remember there’s 4/5 allegedly “pro-gun” Democrats that will be under pressure if they vote to break the filibuster so the other side not only need 5 traitor GOPers they need to convince the handful of red state Dems that it’s a good idea.

Rand won’t vote for the bill and if they manage to break the filibuster he will use other tactics during the debate to stall them and will also filibuster final passage and insist on 60 votes.

Rubio’s been lagging on these issues.

You better start now. $10 million is a lot of dough for a new comer to gin up. You need to start beating Graham down now by simply pointing out the truth on him over and over again.

Kill his election chances early. Make him spend that money covering his tracks and you give a conservative a chance.

Will DeMint run again and against Graham? I don’t think so.

I feel exactly the same way. I’ve held my nose and voted for semi-statist GOPers for too long. In comparison, I’ll take a guy like Rand Paul all day long, warts and all.

Every FReeper ought to take some training. It’s possible to make a difference.

Had we known what we know today how much harder and better and smarter would we have fought and won if we’d taken this training 20 years ago?

The election is still 14/15 months away... 12 months is a good starting point so expect our candidate to emerge in a few months. Lets get it on!

With people in SC now flocking to Mark Sanford, I doubt we can ever convince them to get rid of “their Lindsey”. He’s more well-known than Thurmond was, at least outside of SC.

People in AZ and SC truly believe in these two foolish clowns. What does that say about people in AZ and SC?

When there is mortal danger, the Republic destroying issue must never be presented.

The effort to present the issue must be destroyed

Re: Rubio on your list, see above post for update on possible wobbliness.

He could definatelyl use some "where are you on Toomey-Manchin?" calls.

See also Unreasonable burdens/problems re: Toomey-Manchin.
