12 GOP senators back Rand Paul on gun-control filibuster
POLITICO ^ | JONATHAN ALLEN

Posted on 04/06/2013 7:26:07 AM PDT by JohnPDuncan

Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul’s threat to filibuster any new gun restrictions is gathering steam, as a dozen of his Republican colleagues have now signed onto his plan.

The Kentucky Republican and Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Mike Lee (R-Utah) first wrote to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid late last month to warn him of their intention to try to tie up the Senate if, as planned, Reid moved forward with legislation that would expand background checks and attempt to crack down on interstate gun trafficking.

Reid is expected to bring a gun-control bill to the floor as early as next week, or perhaps the following week, and Paul is renewing his vow to try to block the measure. Paul’s follow-up letter, obtained by POLITICO, bears Monday’s date and is signed by 13 Republicans, including fellow potential 2016 presidential aspirant Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) — who signed on shortly after Paul’s first threat was issued — and National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman Jerry Moran of Kansas.

While Paul gained a new measure of fame among libertarian-minded voters on the right and left during a recent filibuster sparked by the administration’s policy of targeted drone strikes, Reid has an ace in the hole. A new Senate rule would allow him to circumvent a filibuster on the motion to proceed to the gun bill by promising each party two amendments on the legislation. Under that scenario, Paul and his allies would still get a chance to raise their objections on the floor for hours on end, but they couldn’t stop the Senate from starting debate on the bill.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) has said he won’t support a filibuster if Reid promises to allow for amendments on the floor.

Rand has already proven he will go out there and hold the senate for hours and hours and days if he has to.

Look at the drone debate... 50 point swing in public opinion.

When Rand is done the polls on “background checks” will look different.

LEADERSHIP!

Rand just posted this article to his facebook page with these comments:

-
‘I will oppose any legislation that would infringe on Americans’ constitutional right to bear arms, or their ability to exercise this right without being subjected to government surveillance.’
-

Now please, please, please do YOUR part and contact your worthless senators no matter who they are and tell them to Stand with Rand and oppose any gun control bill:

Sounds good, but make sure your Tea Party candidate doesn't choke in the general and you wind up with a devout Dem. These candidates HAVE to go to campaign boot camp and learn to deal with the journ-0-list assault.

Sadly I live in CT so I know they will vote how Malloy and Obama want them to.

Also, if Graham is defeated, the GOP will attack the new candidate.

Not if he pulls it off... it’s a huge undertaking anyway. Graham has $10m in special interest cash but we’re going to give him a fight and let people in SC remind him who is boss.

Thanks very much for the list of patriots senators!

WKB - neither of ours are “Standing with Rand,” so both need to be flooded with “nice” requests to do so.

:)

The GOP views the TEA as its primary threat. They don’t care about the Dems, and would be happy to lose a seat in order to keep the Tea party out.

There is a lot of truth in what you say. The RNC are trying to take control over who the nominee is. They would rather have a moderate like McCain/Romney forever and lose to Democrats than win with an actual conservative who wants to CUT government.

Paging John Cornyn. Has he been hanging out in the good old boys club too long. He should be right there with Cruz.

Agree.

I like Rand. I’m impressed with Idaho - two good Senators. Maybe I’ll move there.

Although I don’t like Rubio on immigration/amnesty/illegals, I’m willing to encourage his support on this issue, just like I’d encourage the support of a Democrat (as if), who I disagree with on other issues.

I don’t include Rubio in that book. What I’ve heard him say about illegals and “meaningful reform” on that makes me want to puke. If he is anything like that with ‘meaningful gun reform” he can just suck it.

I agree. Rubio signed onto this pending gun control filibuster only to pass himself off as a "conservative". He looks to see which way the prevailing wind is blowing and then goes the same way. He's pro amnesty, pro pandering to the muzzzies, and I suspect he will soon switch over to pro-homo marriage as well.

I’m disgusted with the inevitable movement towards amnesty as well, but let’s not kid ourselves. It’s the direction the country is moving in. So we are faced with two choices: stay monochromatic and increasingly irrelevant or focus on what can resonate with America. The GOP needs to become the party of freedom. This was once true, but after the Bush II years, it no longer is. The two party system has become statist team blue and statist team red. No thanks! Give me the guy who is pro gun freedom, pro economic freedom, pro personal freedom, America first and not afraid of the system. Yes, his immigration views suck on the Tancredo Scale. But so do the rest of the major candidates.
