Mormon Democrats announce new national, state organizations

SALT LAKE CITY — Mormon Democrats announced a new national organization Thursday with chapters in eight states joining the Utah State Democratic Party's year-old LDS Dems Caucus.

The Florida-based head of LDS Democrats of America, Robert Taber, said the organization is intended to counter the perception that "there's only one way to be involved in political life as a good Mormon and that's as a Republican."

The LDS Church itself has a long-standing policy of political neutrality.

“The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is neutral in matters of party politics,” church spokesman Scott Trotter said.

Taber, who also leads the organization's Florida chapter, said during a conference call to make the announcement that there is a "long and rich tradition" of Mormons participating in the Democratic Party.

But Taber, the former head of Mormons for Obama, the LDS group that backed President Barack Obama's re-election, said it's become harder over the past four decades for Mormons to be Democrats.

"Something we found is that among many Latter-day Saints, a Democrat is a four-letter word, and Republican is just the way things are," Taber said, describing LDS Democrats as suffering from "feelings of isolation."

He said the national organization, as well as the chapters in Arizona, California, Florida, Hawaii, Idaho, Ohio, Texas and Washington, D.C., is a place for their "coming out and saying, 'We're Latter-day Saints, and we're Democrats.'"

State Democratic Party Chairman Jim Dabakis said the caucus is a result of the party acknowledging it needs Mormons, who make up about 72 percent of voters in a state where most elected offices are held by Republicans.

The caucus gained publicity outside Utah for hosting an event featuring the nation's best-known Mormon Democrat, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, at September's Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C...

I will play. My sons are not old enough. I served in Bosnia and was a reservist for a few years but never got deployed during GWOT.

I just call it like I see it. The duplicity in the Mormon church is so horrendous. I really could not understand their outward support for prop 8 in CA. It blows my mind that they would stand up for traditional marriage. True LDS people know that polygamy is supposed to come back. Why would they block the very law that would allow them to operate openly? It would be like a lion advocating a vegan lifestyle. It is that crazy.

You hate Mormons! Why don’t you just come out and say it! I’d also like to know just how “you know” Mormons can’t wait for polygamy to be legal. I’m not particularly happy with a couple of other religions ( and that includes the Mormons), but I don’t trash them making my points. In today’s world, you could to a whole lot worse than being a Mormon. At least they believe in the family unit. But you go right ahead and continue your spew. It’s your right to do it, as distasteful as it is.

One of the young men in my ward served a mission and graduated from West Point before going on to serve in military. I joined the church after I got married and had 3 sons. As a DoD contractor, I've delivered software to sites at SHAPE in Belgium, Ramstein in Germany, Naples in Italy and Izmir in Turkey. My next destination was Mod UK, but I had to defer so we had travel money to cover another employee for another site. Some other projects put my on aircraft that required survival training at PAX. Not a full time military career, but I did grow up in a Navy family where my dad was deployed half of my life.

My ward in Mira Mesa (San Diego) was full of Navy pilots from Miramar as well as some Navy doctors who were called to serve out of the country when things heated up for Desert Storm. There's plenty of LDS people serving in the military. They aren't dodging service to go on missions.

Wow, it is easier to just scream hate than it is to deal with the issues...

Just what “issues”? Mormons teamed up with the Catholics here in California to try and preserve the sanctity of marriage (Prop 8), but you seem to think that they are just foaming at the mouth to start plural marriage again. Maybe you should consider going after the Jewish judges that have been wreaking havoc on our society like the Gay Jew, Vaughn Walker who overturned Prop 8, or Mariana Pfaelzer the jewish judge who overturned Prop 187 a few years ago to force the citizens of this state to support illegal aliens. Then there’s Bloomberg, Feinstein, Emmanuel each doing his or her best to drive this country to Marxism! Jews represent about 2% of our population, but thanks their Secular Progressive/Marxist philosophy, the are doing real, permanent damage to our society. When you look at what they are doing, the Mormons aren’t even on the radar screen.
