Carson Willing to Step Down as Commencement Speaker After Protests

A pediatric neurosurgeon who has become the darling of conservatives since speaking against nationalized healthcare is now under fire for comments he made about same-sex marriage.
Dr. Benjamin Carson told “Andrea Mitchell Reports” on Friday that he would be willing to step down as commencement speaker at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine after faculty and students signed petitions asking that he not speak.
“I would say this is their day, and the last thing I would want to do is rain on their parade,” Carson told Mitchell.
Carson said in interview that he has not notified the university he won’t be speaking. “I am waiting for appropriate channels,” he said. “I don’t think television is the appropriate channel.”
The petitions began after Carson told Fox News Channel’s Sean Hannity, “My thoughts are that marriage is between a man and a woman. It’s a well-established, fundamental pillar of society and no group, be they gays, be they NAMBLA, be they people who believe in bestiality — it doesn’t matter what they are — they don’t get to change the definition.”
One of the petitions, quoted by The Hill newspaper, reads: “We retain the highest respect for Dr. Carson’s achievements and value his right to publicly voice political views. Nevertheless, we feel that these expressed values are incongruous with the values of Johns Hopkins and deeply offensive to a large proportion of our student body.”
MSNBC’s web report on the story says Carson equating same-sex marriage with pedophilia and bestiality has caused him to lose some of his star power within the GOP. Carson has said he would consider a run for president if the public was still interested in him a year-and-a-half from now.

Perhaps the student body should vote on whether or not he speaks, as opposed to allowing an agenda-driven group declare that they “...feel that these expressed values are incongruous with the values of Johns Hopkins and deeply offensive to a large proportion of our student body.” Feeling is not evidence, large does not mean majority. I doubt the subject of his graduation speech was going to address sexuality of any kind. I know, I know, the point of extreme leftists is to destroy, not to tolerate.

The conservatives who are on the airwaves of any kind, are going to have to learn how to answer the left. It does no good to try to defend one’s beliefs. Go on the attack and don’t be ashamed of having to treat them as such. Turn every accusation back at them. If they are going to go before the left on their turf, keep them busy with your own questions/accusations that they won’t answer, instead of letting them constantly attack. Stand on your rights... for crying out loud... stand for what is right!... and don’t apologize. Don’t go weak on them... learn to fight this war!

I disagree, a petition does not represent the majority of graduates.
Nor should they be denied one last window on an education simply because many of their fellow classmates are demonstratively closed mined.
Carson Willing should continue as speaker and address those too closed mined to face opposing points of view.

So they "feel" that his views are incongruous and deeply offensive, therefore they want to silence him.
Notice, it is not because they are incongruous and offensive, no simply that they "feel" that they are.
Fact is, they have no respect for the 1st amendment or personal political positions except their own...and they will enforce a complete exclusion of others even so mauch as hearing those views, particularly the truth, like a mob.
