Some 1 million workers across the city will soon able to call in sick without losing a day’s salary, under a deal struck yesterday to make small businesses provide paid days off for illness.
The measure comes after City Council Speaker Christine Quinn dropped her long-standing opposition to a paid-sick-days bill.
The new legislation — which Quinn is expected to tout at City Hall today — will give workers at small companies their salary for up to five sick days a year.
Quinn has been facing growing criticism from other mayoral candidates for blocking paid sick leave — as well as a threatened move by council members to take up the bill without her support, sources said.
Under the compromise proposal hammered out by Quinn, a sick-leave mandate would initially apply to companies with 20 or more employees, requiring them to provide five sick days annually.
An earlier bill that Quinn had blocked would have forced companies with as few as five workers to provide paid sick time.
Quinn negotiated a new bill among members of the council, union leaders and city business leaders. The last group had long opposed the costly mandate.

What the heck happened to New York? Wow. This won’t be abused at all. Know how easy it is to get a sick note from your physician?
Yes it is easy to get a note. Sick days, vacation days, and rate of pay should be between employee and employer. I guess she feels like she is the union for the little people.
New York, lead by New York City, is in a Detroit like death spiral.

I saw a debate on this by a few NYC council-ers on MSNBC I think. The 5 employee mandate would have killed those businesses, the 20 isnt that great either.
They could have mandated unpaid sick leave but they just feel compelled to show their generosity with others money.
I used to eat dinner in NYC China-town and those restaurants just ignore the sales tax laws, my bill (check) never including sales tax and thewaiter who brought it pointed that out. This should go over well there.
Is this just for full time employees?
NYC has been booming for 20 years, has the highest concentration of wealth in the world, and just reached an all-time high in population.

They gloss this over, but it won't last, especially with people like Bloomberg and that idiot Cuomo in the saddle.

What’s really about to happen is they’re going to have Democrat mayor next time around. Crime will jump, as will taxes and debt.
The City is likely at a peak right now.
