Arkansas Governor Vetoes Voter ID Bill

(LITTLE ROCK, Ark.) -- Republicans may still get the last laugh after Arkansas Democratic Gov. Mike Beebe vetoed a bill requiring voters to present photo identification during elections.

While GOP lawmakers said the legislation is intended to reduce voter fraud, Beebe argued that it was actually "an expensive solution in search of a problem."

Since Republicans took over the Arkansas Legislature for the first time since the late 1880s, it's more than likely they'll override the veto with a simple majority.

GOP lawmakers throughout the country have attempted to enact similar bills that Democrats contend is a blatant attempt to marginalize their constituency, namely, young, old and minority voters.

Good to see a governor showing the people how he really feels over their wishes, and getting smacked down for it anyway.

What is the cost? Citizens have to PAY fees for ID. Seems the state makes out on the deal.

He should be gone next election. He’s gotten more radical and emboldened each year.

"an expensive solution in search of a problem."

Like most democrats, he's looking at the problem ass-backward. They claim there is very little evidence of voter fraud. Well, duh! If you're not checking IDs, it's kind of difficult to find evidence of fraud, isn't it?

Citizens get voter IDs for free in Arkansas. That eliminates the “poll tax” argument.

Yeah, but lifting a finger to comply, or trudging down to the DMV is so oppressive, don't you know? We should have the government develop telepathy and read our thought and wishes to register to vote. Anything else is "disenfranchisement." /mega-sarc

This is what I don't get; and electorate which elects staunchly conservative super majorities and then also a Leftist Governor.

This, in itself, is indicative of election fraud.

Exactly. Can’t get any of the perks without ID yet these are the same one who can’t seem to find it when voting. (More than once, that is)

“an expensive solution in search of a problem.”

To paraphrase dumblecrat arguments on any subject they favor: if one case of fraud is prevented, its worth the cost.

Own it and bite it.

Expensive solution?! What’s so expensive about saying “May I see your ID?”

Interesting that only a simple majority is required to override a veto. That's almost like the governor having no veto at all.

In many Southern states, the Governor's office is constitutionally weak, with the State Legislature really running the state. That's the way it is here in NC -- years ago, the then-Democratic General Assembly realized that we may elect a Republican Governor and Lt. Governor from time to time, but they were convinced that they'd never lose control of the State Senate and State House, so they stripped all the powers they could from the Gov. and Lt Gov., even stripping the Lt. Gov. of the Presidency of the State Senate. And while the Governor did have veto powers on some issues, this did not include redistricting. Oopsie. The Republicans easily won control of both chambers of the General Assembly in 2010, and redistricted themselves into long-term control; the Governor (then Democrat Bev Perdue) could do nothing about it.

And in 2012, we elected a GOP Governor (Pat McCrory) and Lt. Governor (Dan Forest) to go with the now overwhelmingly GOP Senate and House.

That is exactly why Harry Reid won’t use the nuclear option, it’s great when you’re in power but really sucks when you’re not and it was your own people who did it.

******************

I just looked at the Legislature list member list and it is overwhelmingly in favor of the GOP. The dems will have a tough road to travel while trying to reverse thw GOP control.
