Netanyahu apologizes to Turkey over 2010 Gaza flotilla

In a dramatic development that occurred just as US President Barack Obama was leaving the country, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu spoke with Turkey's Tayyip Erdogan for the first time since the Israeli prime minister took power in 2009.

Netanyahu voiced regret for the loss of life in the 2010 Mavi Marmara incident, apologizing for any mistakes that led to the death of nine Turkish activists. Breaking a three-year deadlock, the two agreed to normalize relations.

"Prime Minister Netanyahu expressed an apology to the Turkish people for any error that may have led to the loss of life, and agreed to complete the agreement for compensation," the statement said.

Sad, Netanyahu can look forward to Erdogan and Obama pulling the rug out from under Israel at the most damaging moment.

That apology cost nothing. If the same circumstances happened again, Israel would kill some more Turks.

In the meantime with Gaza still closed as a port and no one trying to get in the apology works well.

It is interesting that Bibi waited until obama was leaving. You KNOW obama would have loved to have been standing beside Bibi when he issued the apology.

The official media meme will be that “obammy brokered
some sort of deal”. He needs that way more that Bibi
could give a crap. There was some sort of deal and I have
to believe Netanyahu can outsmart purple-lips.

Check the NYT front page.

There was an attempt last year by another Gaza-bound flotilla, but this time the Turks didn’t allow it to even leave the dock.

Very likely, they didn’t wish to inflame matters further on their part.

Like you said, an apology costs nothing. It might help patch things over between Turkey and Israel as well. And it sends a message to the Iranians, with whom the Turks are growing increasingly wary of.

That’s probably about right but also remember that the Israelis might have fudged a bit of Turk airspace when they took out the Syrian nuke project a few years back. Erdogan isn’t going to admit his guys missed the bell and Bibi isn’t going to yap about just how they got there but they both need to show a smidge of public happiness to keep the inside feathers reasonably smooth.

Israel had agreed to pay Turkey compensation “from the beginning”. That was never an issue with Israel. So, since that was offered immediately and from the beginning (from Israel), that doesn’t appear to be the case.

Turkey won’t be on Israel’s side no matter what.

There was no reason for Israel to apologize for defending itself. Turkey attacked them; they deliberately sent terrorists over on those boats.

This is big news. What’s Obama’s game? This is obviously a quid pro quo. Why?

Your Bible doesn’t say “spread the other cheek.”

I suppose you would consider Yeshua to be an anti-semite for driving the Jewish banksters out of the temple?
