Sen. Rand Paul: Illegal immigrants should be allowed to obtain legal status

The dramatic shift in the Republican Party on immigration continued Tuesday, as Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), a conservative tea party icon and possible 2016 presidential contender, endorsed an overhaul of the nation’s immigration laws that would allow the nation’s estimated 11 million illegal immigrants to obtain legalized status. “Immigration will not occur until conservative Republicans, like myself, become part of the solution. That’s why I’m here today: to begin that conversation and become part of the solution,” he said in a breakfast speech Tuesday morning before the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce in Washington.

People jumping on the Rand Paul bandwagon a bit too quick.

Happens all the time around here.

We conservatives are just so starved for leadership that's even passably conservative, we often become infatuated with pretenders to that mantle before giving them time to actually earn it through deed.

This will be devestating in the short term. Immigrants vote OVERWHELMINGLY for the party that gives them the most handouts. That, in this case, is the Democrats. And, now the Democrats can propose instant citizenship or voting rights to aliens already here and look rational in doing so.

Basically, the only way immigration reform will work is to end the handouts and destroy the ability to freeload. Otherwise, all they are doing is increasing the size of the FSA, and the Democratic voting pool.

Reform entitlements, close the border, deal with national defense, THEN deal with immigration “reform”.

Paul is a Kentucky Senator. He needs to go home and shut up about this, I don’t care if he IS from Texas, he does not know this issue.

Kentucky is our target relocation state BECAUSE it has not been invaded yet. To me, coming from TX and CA, it seemed like a breath of fresh air and a return to the USA during a summer trip. I can't believe anyone who has even been to a border state would consider turning the rest of the US over to the invaders. It's criminal!

Yup. Saw that. And I haZ a big happy on that one. She was a GOP shill to the core.

What?? I didn't even smell the ozone. Must have been a breath of fresh air.

Well put. And then, we end up with yet another RINO by not thoroughly vetting the person.

Thanks. I don’t see a huge difference between what Paul is pushing vs Rubio. Maybe different details but it is amnesty all the same. Those who attack Bush and Rubio and call them RINOs (myself included) have to attack Paul as well to be consistent.

Funny you say that.. I feel the same way... I've learned a lot in the last few elections.. end especially in the last 2. One of the most important things I learned, was to NOT judge a character by one or two (positive) things he or she says, but to wait it out to see the big picture. I have been holding back from posting about all that you have mentioned (and a few more) because I couldn't see which direction they were steering. Sadly, it seems that there are still people who have hope (too soon) when they should sit back for a bit and see where the ship is sailing to, where the winds are taking them..

I am definitely not the smartest cookie in the cookie bowl (especially with politics)... but I am stubborn enough to wait it all out, after all of the glitter has fallen to the ground to see if what everyone was cheering about was Disneyland or reality.

I don't have many posts since the General elections (or even the Primaries), but, honestly, I was exhausted mentally at what many of us had been driving through (sludge) for (in many cases) 8 years straight. I still came here to FR and read every day, for about 3-4 hours before I even went on to play a game or to watch a downloaded TV show (can't get them here in Japan.. not to mention, I don't even have a TV here..)..

I think I am feeling comfy enough to crawl back out of my shell again, although very slowly and carefully..

“There isn’t a simple solution”

You think THAT’S the argument?

I believe you’re not following along.

Ah.... then the ozone was particularly fresh and invigorating. I'm sure it cleared everyone's sinuses.

That one was staunchly GOP-e. Eats milquetoast for breakfast. I locked horns with her many times.

She was IMO a true believer. She really believed the BS she spouted to her core. If she didn’t, she was a damn good troll.

But wrong either way. Couldn’t argue logic though. She’d spin out every time.

My father himself warned me about this about 15 years ago (in Texas).. About 30-35 years ago, we worked with illegals (wetbacks) on ranches during our summer hunting time/get away time. Hard workers (back then), families and all.. great cooks too ;)

But, sure enough, once again, what he warned about is happening now (some of the other stuff, I have mentioned before on posts here on FR, like limiting reloading.. putting serial numbers on bullets, etc.).

Anyway, I understand exactly what you meant.. sad to see this is what it has come to :/

Yup. It's a movie that gets played here several times a year, and the ending's always the same. Buyer's remorse and severe disappointment.

It's why public records matter, and campaign blather is just that - blather. If they've got a public service record, then dammit, vet it. If it's their first attempt at being elected, then look for any sort of record we can find to establish their real credentials.

This stuff shouldn't be rocket science, but I'll be damned if some Freepers don't fall for a RINO with a couple of decent campaign speeches every time.

It's embarrassing.

I continue to think that the status quo is turning America into the democratic party, anyway, that many conservatives know this, and that they continue to oppose everything that isn’t one hundred percent pure, thereby assuring the continuation of that which they hate, the status quo.

Conservatives should stand for one principle, and that is a truly controlled border.

That is now, and always has been, the key.
