Affordable Care Act extended free preventive care to 71 million Americans with private health insurance

Health Care Law’s third anniversary sees health costs slowing down, more value for consumers

Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced today that about 71 million Americans in private health insurance plans received coverage for at least one free preventive health care service, such as a mammogram or flu shot, in 2011 and 2012 because of the Affordable Care Act. The new data was released in a report from HHS today.

Additionally, an estimated 34 million Americans in traditional Medicare and Medicare Advantage plans have received at least one preventive service, such as an annual wellness visit at no out of pocket cost because of the health care law.

Taken together, this means about 105 million Americans with private health plans and Medicare beneficiaries have been helped by the Affordable Care Act’s prevention coverage improvements.

Preventive services, consumer protections, and other reforms under the Affordable Care Act are giving millions of Americans of all ages more value for their health care dollars and contributing to the slowest growth in health care costs in 50 years.

“Preventing illnesses before they become serious and more costly to treat helps Americans of all ages stay healthier,” Secretary Sebelius said.  “No longer do Americans have to choose between paying for preventive care and groceries.”

Secretary Sebelius released the preventive services report as HHS celebrates the Affordable Care Act’s third anniversary this week.  The law is keeping down costs and providing more value for consumers and taxpayers through new consumer protections, holding insurance companies accountable, building a smarter health care system, and providing seniors with vital savings on their prescription drugs.

The Affordable Care Act is giving Americans better value for their health insurance plans by:

Prevention??

It takes a helluva lot more to prevent illness than a GD flu shot. I’m so sick of this — and sick of having non medically trained bureaus like Sebeelizbub telling us what to do!!

How about get people out of the fast food joints, get them to stop smoking, stop drinking, doing drugs? How about getting off the couches?

Oh, I guess they have no motivation to do any of that because they know someone somewhere will take care of their fat lazy azzes for freeeeeee!

Hey, SOME diseases happen even if you DO everything right! I mean ...there are some conditions one just cannot prevent. It’s called living on earth as a human being, subject to natural law and forces. It just happens.

And one day, we’re all going to die anyway, no matter how many damn flu shots we get. ...sometimes it’s just our time to go!

free? The premiums went up greater than the cost of whatever “free” addition was received ... but it is all free, right?

If its free then who is paying for it?

From the looks of the article, I'd say the folks with private insurance are. 71 million of them got coverage (and a premium hike) but they aren't the ones identified as receiving a service with no out-of-pocket expenses.

I'm not trying to rag on folks with Medicare. I just think it's preposterous to claim that 105 million benefit when 71 million of those have seen skyrocketing costs.

And it will get worse when they start applying CommieCare in a politically correct manner.

15 yr old with MS denied treatment.

35 yr old with AIDS, and a very expensive drug regiment needed to stay alive, admitted with full benefits/coverage.

Here’s the bottom line:

This is parroted by the MSM
It’s carpet bombed on social media

And a large majority of Americans will enthusiastically believe it and thank Caliph Baraq for the gift.

Good point.

I have tried to catch myself saying ‘at no charge’ when the word ‘free’ comes up. Its hard to do.

When you think about there is almost nothing that is ‘free’. The two things I think of are - 1) Air we breath and 2) water to drink from a stream. After those 2 items not much is really ‘free’ in any sense.

Something may be “no charge” to the end recipient. But it still cost SOMEBODY SOMETHING SOMEWHERE.

There is no free lunch. In reality there not really ‘free’ anything.

I don't know. A lot of people believe they are going to get free private health insurance. They're not. They're going to be put onto Medicaid. They'll have difficulty finding a doc to take them. And many who do get subsidized private insurance don't have a free ride because they still have significant out of pocket expenses and deductibles. I think a lot of folks have a rude awakening coming.

Not only is it all free - it's all worthless.

I just can't wait to find out that 'big gulps' are bad... white bread is bad and so is sugar'... But having unprotected sex with 400 men isn't...

I just did our taxes so I combined all costs for 2012- all health insurance and all co-pays for doctors and scripts. It totaled almost $10k for 2 people. I dam sure wouldn’t call that free. Commie witch needs to shut her mouth.

No it didn’t.

It forced taxpayers (present and future) to pay for health care for 71 million who may or may not have been Americans.

Thanks mdittmar.

To a looter government it's all “free”. They don't have to pay for anything. They just take it.

“The only protection from Obamacare is your own physical fitness”

Bingo, can’t be said enough.

Eventually we will all need health care. But anything you can do to minimize your need for healthcare and push it out in time is the best thing a person can do for themselves.

To bad we’ll all be paying through the nose for it anyway.

It means men will now subsidize (just for example) ob/gun and neonatal services, despite our complete lack of a vagina or uterus.

Obama has personally killed healthcare in America.

Actually he had plenty of help from the closet progressives in the GOPe. The House has been prevented from even talking about defunding ObamaCare by none other than Boehner and his minions.
