(The Republican senator's embrace of marriage equality shows just how successful advocates have been in linking the personal with the political.)
Rob Portman, Republican Senator from Ohio and a former frontrunner to be Mitt Romney's running mate, has declared that he now favors gay marriage. As Portman says in an op-ed for the Columbus Dispatch, his change of heart was personal:
That isn't how I've always felt. As a congressman, and more recently as a senator, I opposed marriage for same-sex couples. Then something happened that led me to think through my position in a much deeper way.
Two years ago, my son Will, then a college freshman, told my wife, Jane, and me that he is gay. He said he'd known for some time, and that his sexual orientation wasn't something he chose; it was simply a part of who he is. Jane and I were proud of him for his honesty and courage. We were surprised to learn he is gay but knew he was still the same person he'd always been. The only difference was that now we had a more complete picture of the son we love.
Portman goes on to make the conservative (and entirely reasonable) case for gay marriage. Personal liberty means allowing folks to marry who they want without government interference. Marriage and family are stabilizing institutions, and more people, gay or straight, joining stabilizing institutions is a good thing.

Who he is? He's joined the ranks of perversion and anti-decent society.
A misguided youth who decided that he likes to achieve his orgasms in a slightly different manner and is ready to renounce God and His Commandments.
Would Portman feel the same if young Portman was a bestiality adherent? "Dad. I want to marry my dog because relations with him make me feel like a human being."
Thanks to Portman for giving much ammunition to the opposition. He is a true weasel.
Good timing for a revelation. He's known about this for two years but was still anti same-sex marriage during the 2012 campaign season.
I guess if Portman’s son had decided to be a rapist or murderer, Portman would change his stance on those behaviors as well.
Not a barf alert, more like a schadenfreude one.
Portman came out in favor of gay marriage, but the Left won’t actually give him credit for it. Because his motivations are deemed “selfish” rather than altruistic. Poor dear ...
It should serve as a warning to Republicans and Conservatives that the Left will ALWAYS find an excuse not to let someone other than a fellow-travelling purist come onto their plantation.
Yes and it’s probably good for several reasons that the young homosexual didn’t want to marry his sister, or the family dog.
Love the sinner, hate the sin. If I had made such a confession to my minister father he would have condemned my moral terpitude and demanded my obedience to God’s law. I might also have felt his wrath in a more physical way.
We need to seriously keep the GOP Governor’s spots. That is our ONLY saving grace for keeping the Constitutional amendment about Marriage being between one woman and man. If it is up to the Senate and House we could be in trouble but thank God we have a good majority of governorships. (Defense of Marriage Act....just remembered the names as I was typing.
Meh. Why not?
I can’t think of a more selfish act than that of a homosexual.
I like this take on the matter. http://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2013/03/senator_portmans_homosexual_descent.html?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=facebook
homosexuals are arested development nacisists.

This is a NYT meme to influence the USSC with the notion myth of “born that way”
it is really easy if ANY mating behavior alone justifies marriage then government can not criminalize ANY form of sex act.

So if I want to marry my mother, and she wants to marry me, we can do so without government interference?
Because his motivations are deemed selfish rather than altruistic.
*********
The fact that he made this distracting announcement right around CPAC is certainly suggestive of a selfish or caculated motive. CNN and the other corrupt liberal networks gleefully seized on this “story” and the timing couldn’t have been better for them.
How can you say billions of years and then quote from the bible?
It’s like someone handing you a dog s#!t sandwitch and telling you it is ham on rye. “Enjoy”!
Supposing one of RINO Portman’s spawn steals a car. Suddenly auto theft become socially and morally acceptable?

[How can you say billions of years and then quote from the bible?]
Self-evident Truth perceived in a mind Created free.
So Genesis is wrong?
Because it doesn’t say billions?
Or because it doesn’t go into the details of how time, being a derivative function of state-change, progresses relative to E within the inertial frame of the observing nomadic sheep herder?
Why should it say billions when there are no billions.
