Bill Maher on California Income Taxes: 'Liberals - You Could Actually Lose Me'

Speaking about the taxes the rich pay particularly in California, the host of HBO's Real Time said, "Liberals - you could actually lose me" (video follows with transcribed highlights and commentary):

The panel discussion began with a conversation about the various budget proposals currently on the table in Washington.

MSNBC's Rachel Maddow predictably slammed Congressman Paul Ryan's (R-Wisc.) plan.

"The Ryan budget is a document that says the big problems in America right now are that rich people do not have enough money," she mocked. "They need relief from confiscatory tax rates."

"Well," Maher unsuccessfully tried to interrupt as Maddow continued. When she was finally done, he surprisingly pushed back.

Pointing at Virginia's former Republican Congressman Tom Davis, Maher said, "You know what? Rich people - I'm sure you'd agree with this - actually do pay the freight in this country."

"I just saw these statistics," he continued, "I mean, something like 70 percent. And here in California, I just want to say liberals - you could actually lose me. It's outrageous what we're paying - over 50 percent. I'm willing to pay my share, but yeah, it's ridiculous."

So it appears there is a point where Maher's money becomes more important than his politics.

Consider that in California, millionaires on top of the 39.6 percent they'll pay to the federal government in 2013, there's an additional 14.63 percent that now goes to the state.

Add in payroll taxes, local taxes, and property taxes, and I've seen estimates that the total tax bite could exceed 60 percent here.

But the rich aren't paying their "fair share."

Regardless, it sure was nice to see a liberal - especially one that contributed to Obama's reelection campaign! - complaining about his taxes.

its sad that Americans are now so sheep as to think something below 50% confiscation is acceptable.

We’re going to have to set up checkpoints to prevent liberals from crossing over into free states.

So it appears there is a point where Maher's money becomes more important than his politics.

Hardly the case. He's just realized what folly the Democrats plans represent. He stated irrefutable facts. His typical liberal mental illness may prevent him from acting upon those facts.

Priceless! So Maher is a closet conservative when it finally gets down to HIS money! lol

If the government came barging in to anyone’s house and said “we’re taking half your stuff” there’d be gunfire.

Do it to people everyone is told can afford it, and the government actively demonizes, and do it under the guise of “fair share” and nobody peeps.

Same damn outcome. Then keep asking for more, and more.

Libtards like Maher are liberal, but one thing libs are is stingy. they believe their liberal views allow them to not have their wealth confiscated like everyone else. They are cheap people and will do anything to hang onto their money, but are the first to bitch OTHERS aren’t paying their fair share. When the sights are set on their own stuff, then they start complaining about taxes.

It’s all about the self with libtards. That’s all we’re seeing in Maher’s reaction. He like a typical libtard rips on those who also want to actually keep what they earn and not have it all legally stolen from them. But to a libtard only those people are selfish, the libtard thinks they are special because they have all the correct views on issues, and somehow that translates into better treatment than the unenlightened masses get.

Ten percent tax was mention by Dr. Ben Carson during his speech to the audience at CPAC. He made mention than a very high authority had previously had it written in some great book.
A great speech worth listening to many times over and then doing something about it.
I liked his name for the USA as a “Pinnacle Nation”

Most lobs are like that. I read a thread on DU where they were talking about obamacare, and the added tax that vets are going to pay on medical equipment. (Medical equipment excise tax) Some of the libs were complaining that the doctors offices were passing the cost of the taxes onto the customers, and not eating the difference. “That is insane so am I do believe every time Obama says that the rich should pay more he is advocating my (lower middle class) costs going up? “
They don’t understand business. They are angry that businesses are selfish and cruel enough to pass on the tax to customers. “I wanted YOU to pay higher taxes. Not me!!!”

I propose the rest of the 49 States amend their constitutions to include the ‘Bill Maher is Obtuse’ Amendment concerning the rate of taxation set upon certain individuals. The amendment would apply to every public figure that backs, endorse, or funds tax and spenders elected to a Federal/State positions that seeks to change State residence. The rate will be set at 75% and gradually applied higher each time Maher complains.

A free transvestite will also be made available in order to fulfill sexual pleasures. This provision will guarantee that Maher will have no problems with the proposed amendment/tax.

Maher probably has no idea how much he actually makes, has, or pays in taxes. He has “people” to do this for him, and they’re probably stealing him blind. One of his “people” is probably worried that there won’t be as much to steal, and dropped a bug in Bill’s ear.

Note how Maddow’s “argument” is a smart remark. That’s her show in a nutshell.

What is sad is that Americans think they have a moral right to vote to take someone else’s property/labor.

Slavery through the ballot box. Immoral to the core and will end of the Republic.

They don’t know any better and wonder why things continue to get worse...

The taxation scheme, as it gets bigger and bigger and has to move farther down the income ladder, is the prime reason those in DC KNOW they have to do something about guns now. It is called self preservation. Today in Cyprus they found out what happens over night when the government runs out of everyone else’s money. Of course the unarmed citizenry is left to bang on the doors of their banks demanding they be “allowed” to get to their dwindling cash balances. My only advice to anyone with any kind of firearm: do not give them up, ensure you have enough ammo, and be ready for the trigger finger recall elections soon to be coming to a voting booth near you.

That’s nothing. I’ve read that the colonists’ tax burden leading up to our revolution was no more than one or two percent of total income. Of course, we didn’t go to war over taxes alone. It was more the Brits’ hamhanded response to tax protests. The unpopular new taxes were repealed before war broke out, anyway.
