SWAT officer attracts ridicule after hes pictured with his rifle sight on backwards
Daily Mail ^ | March 16, 2013 | DAILY MAIL REPORTER

Posted on 03/16/2013 12:35:50 AM PDT by expat1000

A SWAT team in upstate New York is being mocked as an example of the difference between military and police training after an officer was captured peering through a backwards sight on his combat rifle.

As users on the military Reddit were quick to point out when the image was posted, the reverse sight makes it effectively useless.

Users mocked the SWAT officers training and some went so far as to question the motives of some of the men serving in local law enforcement.

Ok I received no formal training on an EOTECH other than looking at the box, and I can use it rather well on my M4 and I don’t get nearly the practice time these guys do.

I hope this was just a “in a hurry, he noticed the second he sighted the gun the first time” thing, but I doubt it..

Reminds me of a guy at college that was always bragging about how great a skier he was. On and on and on.

Then when we got the first snow he came out with his ski boots on into the living room and hopping around and all excited how he was going to hit the back bowls at Vail and the double diamonds and the chutes, etc. I let him go on for awhile.

“Um, Jerry. You got your boots on the wrong feet.”

Some cops now wear full camo instead of the typical all-black SWAT look. Local and State LEO really has become a bunch of Walter Mitty’s, and the shift likely has contributed to a significant change in the police mindset as well.

change occurred long before. two things:

1. they became LEOs, no longer peace officers

2. #1 dept policy became “officer safety above EVERYTHING else.”

Quick Question.....

Seems odd that it would lock in place backwards.

Has anyone here ever tried that?

Can it really lock in?

Un-effing real! Looks like his finger is inside the trigger guard as well.

I always felt that as a practical pistol shooter (IPSC) I had more respect and better safety habits with my guns that most of the cops I knew.

Yes it can. It's on a standard Picatinny rail not a custom mount. Mine has a quick release and would be easy to put on backwards. The mistake would be obvious first time you tried to use it but if they don't store the sights on the rifles I could see it happening. Still, it's really sloppy. Hopefully that was training and not a real emergency.

It was a real emergency. It was a recent police standoff between the police and a gunman in New York state.

At least he realized the fact his Holosight was on backward as evidenced by the back up iron sight in the raised position...

I would not think the primary sight would not be stored on the carbine, however, zero would be compromised.

Yep. Also I knew one that shot himself in the foot mishandling his own personal 1911 getting out of his car after coming back from the range. The force covered it up - not only the accident but as this was in Canada the gun should have been unloaded and stored in a case. Carrying in a holster and loaded outside the range were both crimes.

I'll confess to attaching a FastFire backwards the first time I installed one. In my defense, it took less than 30 seconds for me to subsequently slap myself on the forehead and flip it around, but for that brief amount of time I could have been at the mercy of our house cat.

The first thing that struck me about the photo was actually the odd - at least to me - way the other guy is holding what appears to be a Remington 870P; it would look reasonable if he were behind an MG34 and had a stahlhelm on his dome, though. I tend to keep my left hand out on the forearm of any pump gun, but I'm just a dumb old civilian without the benefits of government training and accreditation.

Good catch, I think. What the heck is he doing? The muzzle’s going to jump straight up if he fires like that. Bye, bye, sight picture. Possibly he’s more concerned about not exposing himself than actually hitting anything.

"I’ve seen cops do things that would get them kicked off of most ranges."

I have asked Police Officers to exit the range, during training classes, for their behavior.
Safety violations were not tolerated and would not be condoned by continuing with them in attendance in the classes I was providing.
Sadly, this was an all too common behavior.

In any event, launching a rifled slug or a 3" buckshot load off the hood without having control of the fore end would provide a strong incentive to not do it again.

There is another picture from the same incident floating about that shows the guy with the camo and copious tactical gear putting his trigger finger dang near up on top of his shotgun's receiver; I can only assume that to be another modern technique taught only to those whom government has elevated over peons such as myself.

Actually, if you look closely there is no charging handle on the bolt of the shotgun so I think it’s a pump action. Maybe he thinks its a single shot, ‘cause he’s not going to get a second round off in a timely manner with both hands on the butt stock. (but then, I’m not a trained professional like that fellow)

*** I’ve seen cops do things that would get them kicked off of most ranges. ***

Yeah, some cops aren't exactly 'the sharpest knife in the drawer'. Case in point the Chicago PD.

In Chicago all cops have to buy their own duty weapon (which is good IMO). And there's a list of approved manufacturers that cops can choose from along with approved calibers: 9mm, 357Sig, 40S&W & iirc 45ACP. But this is where is gets ... 'interesting' (dumb).

Rookies -- from graduating the Academy to 1 year of service *may* buy and use a Glock 9mm for their duty weapon. However after that time Glocks of any caliber are FORBIDDEN for all cops, period, no exception. And that ex-Rookie must now dump another $600 min on a new duty weapon and put that Glock 9mm back in the 'dresser drawer' as his personal / off-duty weapon (or trade it in or sell it, most don't).

The Reason for Glock Ban -- a 'few' years ago a CPD Commander shot himself in the leg with his Glock. Natch, the Commander blamed the Glock for the ... 'accidental discharge' (LOL) and had the big brass ban all Glocks as duty weapons. But again, not for Rookies, only 'veteran' cops.

Now if Glocks are so unsafe why would they be allowed at all? Are the lives of Rookie cops worth less than 'veterans'? If not why can they use Glocks but then must sh*t-can them at one year. It makes zero sense.

Now I'm far from a Cop Basher. I wanted to be a Chi Cop when I was in HS and had many friends on the CPD over my time. And I listen to CPD Radio calls every day, like right now. But today, I wouldn't do their job for $250K a year with the crap they have to put up with and the absolute JUNK they have to work with. Not to mention they're undermanned by at least 3,000 Cops today. Some cops say they need 5,000 more.

Here's a neat Blog to get the skinny on what really is going on with the CPD and the REAL CRIME in Chicago: Second City Cop. It's run by a Pro 2A Chi Copper and he doesn't hold back.

Really nothing wrong with that pose. In ranks inspection of arms often requires the inspector to look down the barrel to check too see if it is clean. But, he only does this after the person holding the weapon has performed a clearing of the weapon. Normally the inspector takes the weapon in hand and double checks the weapon to see if it is cleared at the bolt before he starts looking down barrels etc.

Silly, gun training is only for soldiers strictly limited by ROE protecting the rights of enemy combatants to not insult the ‘international community’.

SWAT doesn't really need gun training anymore to deal with us pesky Americans. As the Dorner incident showed, they can simply burn the building down if actually engaging a perp is too scary for them. The gear we buy them is mainly to look cool and intimidate.

Who cares if others might be inside the building they burn? Officer safety is #1 and the media will keep it quiet to avoid riots.
