A respected Republican senator has announced he is reversing his stance against gay marriage after his 21-year-old son came out to him and his wife.
Rob Portman, an Ohio Republican considered as a running mate by the Romney campaign, said the discovery that his son Will, 21, was gay had given him a 'new perspective' and understanding of why equal opportunities matter.
Will, a junior at Yale University, came out to his politician father and mother, Jane, two years ago, The Plain Dealer reports.
Portman, who backed the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act, says since his son's announcement he has been reconsidering his views on homosexuality and same-sex marriage.
He said he had spent some time speaking to his church in Cincinnati and former Vice President Dick Cheney, whose daughter is gay.
Today he wanted to officially and publicly reverse his political position on the issue.
'It allowed me to think of this issue from a new perspective, and that's of a Dad who loves his son a lot and wants him to have the same opportunities that his brother and sister would have -- to have a relationship like Jane and I have had for over 26 years,' Portman told the local paper.
'The overriding message of love and compassion that I take from the Bible, and certainly the Golden Rule, and the fact that I believe we are all created by our maker, that has all influenced me in terms of my change on this issue.'
He added that he believed opening marriage up to homosexual couples 'strengthens the institution' and he realized his son's sexuality 'wasn't a choice'.
He said his son had not exerted any influence on him politically but supported his new position and 'encouraged' him.

Better yet, he should have sat his son down and explained to him that he would be one of the people who saved the world from God’s wrath if he accepted the bible and made his life a sacrifice to God. So in essence Ohioans voted for the son! What is this guys stance on Illegals? If the Kid wants to marry a Mexican Illegal will that change the direction of what side of the fence this fool is gonna fall on. Are there no Politicians that live by their convictions and not blow with the wind?
I will never understand the power this particular depravity holds over human beings. People don’t change their opinion of theft or murder because a loved one is a thief or a killer. But if the family member announces he’s a sodomite, suddenly it’s just fine.

True dat. Portman's sellout fits right in with Pat Cadell's comments about how the RINO party has been lost to career pols who care only about hanging onto power.
However, I think Portman's position is similar to that of many weak-minded people. The gay lobby is gaining a foothold everywhere because parents don't want to think badly of their homosexual offspring. Churches are caving on the issue because parents don't want to think of their homosexual sons and daughters suffering eternal torment; so they change God's rules to something kinder and gentler.
One of the things we’re learning without a doubt is that the GW Bush administration was shot clear through with supporters of the radical sodomite agenda.
The more I think about this, the more I agree with those who think that government should be out of the marriage business.
Whatever they THINK will get them re-elected, and covering their closet-issues that come forth to protect from attacks. Sex deviate-in-the-family is no longer a black mark, in Politics.

Fact is, marriage is not only a spiritual thing, a sacrament if you will, it is the foundation of civil society. It is the most basic building block of human governance and economy. The state has an overriding interest. The survival and health of the natural family is of the gravest importance to any nation, a matter of our very survival.

I would argue that this is a reason to extend the terms of representatives from two years to at least four. Our current system means that HoR members are perpetually running for office.

If it were my son, it would be pretty hard to leave him alone and let him live his life, as though there’s nothing wrong with being a sodomite. Scripture is plain when it comes to the eternal destination of homosexuals. How could a believing parent not care?
Yes, I didn’t think we elected Senators to change their position on issues based on the lifestyle of their 21 year old kid. Pretty ridiculous, he must not even realize what an idiot he sounds like when he tells the whole country that his 21 year old is the Senator’s moral compass.
I’m sure he’ll get a pass since gay marriage is the new thing, but someday it will be as popular as new Coke.
