Republican senator reverses his opposition to gay marriage after his 21-year-old son comes out

A respected Republican senator has announced he is reversing his stance against gay marriage after his 21-year-old son came out to him and his wife.

Rob Portman, an Ohio Republican considered as a running mate by the Romney campaign, said the discovery that his son Will, 21, was gay had given him a 'new perspective' and understanding of why equal opportunities matter.

Will, a junior at Yale University, came out to his politician father and mother, Jane, two years ago, The Plain Dealer reports.

Portman, who backed the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act, says since his son's announcement he has been reconsidering his views on homosexuality and same-sex marriage.

He said he had spent some time speaking to his church in Cincinnati and former Vice President Dick Cheney, whose daughter is gay.

Today he wanted to officially and publicly reverse his political position on the issue.

'It allowed me to think of this issue from a new perspective, and that's of a Dad who loves his son a lot and wants him to have the same opportunities that his brother and sister would have -- to have a relationship like Jane and I have had for over 26 years,' Portman told the local paper.

'The overriding message of love and compassion that I take from the Bible, and certainly the Golden Rule, and the fact that I believe we are all created by our maker, that has all influenced me in terms of my change on this issue.'

He added that he believed opening marriage up to homosexual couples 'strengthens the institution' and he realized his son's sexuality 'wasn't a choice'.

He said his son had not exerted any influence on him politically but supported his new position and 'encouraged' him.

They have no convictions. They are not trustworthy.

It shouldn't even matter what his personal opinion is. He represents the people of Ohio. If he fails to represent them, he has to be defeated.

Portman has read the tea leaves and thinks they are all coming up pink.

According to what? The last time I checked, the last vote on the issue in a conservative state resulted in a marriage amendment passing 61-39 in North Carolina last year.

I don't believe for a minute the majority in Ohio want gay marriage, let alone within in the Republican party.

Portman is a reliable financial conservative vote

I couldn't care less.

He and the Republican party are going to be made to realize they will remain conservative on social issues or have no chance of winning elections.

You had your choice between Portman and a Democrat which you know would be for gay marriage and also for Obamacare, etc. etc., etc.

My statement on Portman's so-called "fiscal conservatism" was meant to be satire because he, like others who claim this mantle is that they aren't even that!

RINOs are merely political cowards as they'd be registered in other states or they view democrats as unsophisticated and want to think of themselves as elite, which they don't think of as the other party.

That's why they tossed the term "Reagan Republicans" for "Eisenhower Republicans!" They would hav claimed themselves "Rockefeller (as in Nelson Rockefeller) Republicans" but he lost and died in an unsavory manner!

True. But we also need to know what the standards are that our rep will abide by, because they do make autonomous decisions at times, and have to think on their feet.

We’re not praying for our leaders as we should, which is why stuff like this happens.

So Portman’s message to us is that a universal human institution, known from the beginning of time as reckoned in human terms, now has to change because his little boy is queer!

R-i-i-i-i-ght ... you got it, Robbie.

Do you feel the same way about Republicans elected in Maine, Maryland, or Washington?

I happen to think a politician should keep his campaign promises. There is nothing worse than flip-flopping politician with no core beliefs.

I agree. I will vote against it when I can, but I know it is going to happen.

I don’t really care at all- because I am going to let God deal with them, but I doubt many of them actually want to get married anyway.

This is about eroding faith in our country, but really the only ones who they are going to hurt is themselves.

"According to my opinion, and the opinions of many defectors of my caliber, only about 15% of time, money, and manpower is spent on espionage as such. The other 85% is a slow process which we call either ideological subversion, active measures, or psychological warfare. What it basically means is: to change the perception of reality of every American that despite of the abundance of information no one is able to come to sensible conclusions in the interest of defending themselves, their families, their community, and their country.

It's a great brainwashing process which goes very slow and is divided into four basic stages.

The first stage being "demoralization".

It takes from 15 to 20 years to demoralize a nation. Why that many years? Because this is the minimum number of years required to educate one generation of students in the country of your enemy exposed to the ideology of [their] enemy. In other words, Marxism-Leninism ideology is being pumped into the soft heads of at least 3 generation of American students without being challenged or counterbalanced by the basic values of Americanism; American patriotism.

Most of the activity of the department [KGB] was to compile huge amount / volume of information, on individuals who were instrumental in creating public opinion.  Publisher, editors, journalists, uh actors, educationalists, professors of political science.  Members of parliament, representatives of business circles.

Most of these people were divided roughly into two groups:  those who would tow the Soviet foreign policy, they would be promoted to positions of power through media and public manipulation;  [and] those who refuse the Soviet influence in their own country would be character assassinated OR executed physically, come Revolution.  "

That’s the real tragedy of this. He actually admitted he ‘ll change his positions based on his familiy members behavior. Damn his constituents and the platform he ran on, if his son likes getting railed by men at Yale it must be good for America. And another thing—all of US dumping on Portman should hold Cheney to the same standard.

Yep. It changes one’s perspective when you find out someone you love is homosexual.

Really? What if you found out someone you love is a murderer? I think 'perspective' has nothing to do with it. The politician is a spineless unprincipled scumbag -a leaf that goes wherever the wind blows.

Homosexual sex is self destructive societally and individually EVEN if someone you love chooses to engage in the depraved activity.

Well, now there goes a politician with bedrock principles./s

What if his son admitted to sex with children?

He’d support that?

Or his son with a duck or Marybelle the ewe?

Going to support that?

Sheesh! Talk about a human wind vane!

Got to be a RINO.

As the old saying goes, “Those who stand for nothing, fall for anything.”
