But why does anyone need to carry them on?

The whole reason the TSA exists is because of small knives/boxcutters, amazing.
Just abolish the TSA

I carry every day - everywhere. Typically a 3.5-4” folding tactical knife.
Can’t carry them when I fly. The new rules limit blade size and it can’t lock. It’s better than nothing.

Because you need them either going or after arriving.
If you put them in your checked bag the TSA people steal em.

I carry my pocket knife everywhere. I guess I’d have to downsize to meet the new rules though. :)
Seriously, if a few passengers had been packing a pocket knife on 9/11, they might have had the guts to fight back against the terrorists.
The best defense against a bad guy with a knife is a good guy with a knife - or a gun.

I carry two knives, and I really don’t see the reason for removing the key chain knife at anytime, anywhere.
People use a knife for many things in the course of a day, it so fundamental that almost no human being can see going a week without using a knife.

The Transportation Security Administration said today there was an extremely low likelihood pocket knives could be used by terrorists to bring down an airliner, and the agency vowed to work with authorities to prosecute anyone using one in a mid-air assault. Pre-9/11/01 there was an extremely low likelihood that box cutters would be used by terrorist to bring down an airliner (actually, the box cutters were used to take control of the people on the airliner, and then the terrorists flew the airliners into buildings).
I wish the agency luck in prosecuting anyone who uses a knife to take control of an airliner and then fly the airliner into a building.
