Ammo Shortages: More Than Simple Supply and Demand?

Certainly there are those who see a conspiracy behind every tree, none more so perhaps than Mac Slavo. Writing for his inelegantly named SHTF Plan, he points out that since President Obama was first elected in 2008, Americans have purchased more than 65 million guns, which averages one new gun purchase every 1.5 seconds. Says Slavo, this “suggests there is much more … than just people stocking up to go hunting or sports shooting.” And then, without providing sources, Slavo ticks off the statistics: Smith and Wesson is running at full capacity, Ruger is ramping up production to meet demand, Armalite is “maxed out,” Colt is increasing its production runs, Springfield Armory is “running 30-45 days behind,” while Magpul “is behind 1 MILLION (his bold) mags.… Do not expect any large quantities anytime soon.”

If the information you hear doesn't originate from Hornady Manufacturing, don’t believe it.

Here are some of rumors we've heard, and questions we've received:

•Have you stopped production, or has the government forced you to stop?

◦Not at all.

•Did you stop selling bullets so you could only make loaded ammunition?

◦Absolutely not.

•Since we can’t find your product you must be selling it all to the government.

◦Nope, less than 5% of our sales are to government entities.

•Why can’t you make more? Ramp up production? Turn on all the machines?

◦ We've been steadily growing our production for a long time, especially the last five years. We've added presses, lathes, CNC equipment, people and space. Many popular items are produced 24 hours a day.

We are producing as much as we can; much more than last year, which was a lot more than the year before, etc. No one wants to ship more during this time than we do.

No I wasn’t as free as you were to purchase ammunition. I didn’t have the financial ability you had. So we are down to the same common denominator. It doesn’t matter what you believe in, in the end it’s every man for himself, right? And you think one patriot with a hundred thousand rounds is going to be more effective against the enemy than 500 patriots with 200 rounds each? So you are going to be an army all by yourself, right?

So everything for you boils down to money doesn’t it? Even the survival of the country? How long do you think you will survive an onslaught? Long enough to use up a hundred thousand rounds? I doubt it. You bought all that ammo because it made you feel secure against your fears. You did not buy that ammo with any sense of strategy or tactics. You need massive personnel coverage to defeat an enemy, not just isolated pockets of resistance that can be neutralized at great cost to the defending side because all of that ammo will go to the enemy as supplies once you are taken down and liquidated as the one person that you are. This has nothing to do with sarcastically insulting me as being on the “wrong” forum. You don’t know what you are doing and are not trained in collective defense. You think you’re a one-man army. You’re not. You LACK LEADERSHIP NOR DO YOU KNOW HOW TO TAKE ORDERS SO YOU HAVE NO RIGHT PURCHASING AN AMMO DUMP AND THUS DEPRIVING HUNDREDS OF OTHER DEFENDERS OF THE TOOLS TO SURVIVE A BATTLE. YOU are a liability not because you failed to buy ammo for me, but because by your hoarding behavior you have prevented many other patriots from being able to effectively arm themselves. That is why you are part of the problem. Selfishness and greed will never win a war. Cooperation will. Read about George Washington at Valley Forge. That was an effort by many men against a common enemy. Same as what we will need in the coming conflict. It wasn’t just the “rich guys” who had the bullets.

1. You don’t know what my situation or priorities were. But unless you are a felon, you were just as free, maybe less able.
2. I have far more rifles and ammunition than I can use. I like to think that I’m a community organizer.
3. I’ll decide who gets my stuff, when, and why.
4. Blood relation and constitutionalists go to the front of the line.

You don't know a damned thing about me. I haven't horded ammo, but am determined to buy what I find of what I use. My supplies wouldn't cover a good afternoon at the range with a few buddies.

I don't have a lot of money, I don't have a lot of supplies. But I have what I have and I don't feel any obligation to share with those who fail to prepare for themselves. It didn't take much money to build up what I had, I simply did it over time.

I don't expect anyone to share with me. If I come across like-minded people, I may share supplies, but not to the detriment of me and mine. I don't think I'm a one-man army, I don't think I'll get out alive, either. It's just the nature of my situation. I live in a blue state with a few pockets of red. That, for now, I can't change.

You think chastising people on a public forum shows your leadership? Hardly. I've served my country, know how to take orders, and know how to tell people to go away. I signed the dotted line to give all if necessary, and I don't give a flying f*** what you think. You sound like a DU troll, since you sure have a hard-on for railing against the rich. Last I checked, I was firmly middle class, and with Obama and his ilk in charge, headed to lower-middle-class if not lower class, in a rapid fashion.

So, why don't you go fling your spittle at someone else, somewhere else.
