A Norwalk mother says one of the countrys top gun retailers, Cheaper Than Dirt!!, has been sending her underage son gun catalogs after he ordered them online, despite her repeated requests for them to stop.
She says her son is mentally unwell and, since the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary, she is concerned. To protect her family, NBC Connecticut has concealed her identity. For the story, we will call her Amy.
I can't get a gun company to stop sending my 15-year-old son catalogs, Amy said. The things that happened in Newtown are happening in my home. I have a kid with issues, and he's fascinated with guns.
Amy told NBC Connecticut she discovered the first Cheaper Than Dirt! catalog in her mailbox at home in late December, about 10 days after the shooting in Newtown.
I saw there were guns all over the front and flipped it over and I saw it was addressed to my 15-year-old son, she said.
Her son, who has been diagnosed with ADHD and has criteria to be bipolar and sociopathic, told her he had requested it.

“Gun Retailer Begs Mother to Stop Giving Unfettered Internet Access to Her Mentally Ill Son.”
Wow I didn’t even go there but thank you! Well Played!
Oh Nos scary gun catalogs. Which the company has agreed to stop sending to both her address and the absent fathers. She cant control her offspring and it is some big evil gun and ammo companies problem. Kid with no discipline acts up in class, school declares him ADD (should be PADD, parent attention deficit diagnosis) so they drug him up rather than deal with problem. Dollars to doughnuts she is collecting Social Security disability for junior. Just seeing her reaction you know the divorce wasnt her fault, her kid is not her fault, the catalogs are not her fault, her inability to stop them isnt her fault, so the government should do something.
Lock the bastard up.
Agree.. 100%
I’m all for free market. But I do believe that (price increases) will haunt them for a long time.
What a frightening picture. I haven’t seen red carpet like that since the 70s...
Where is the kid’s Dad? Dad needs to take charge of this home situation.
Bingo. Probably the same place as Adam Lanza's dad.
ADHD is not a mental illness of the type that would matter. It is an illness that prevents children from concentrating, it doesn’t make them into killers.
This story and this mother does a great disservice to the many children who suffer from ADHD, who have now been labelled sociopaths.
I also don’t know how you have a “tendency to be bipolar”, but that’s a whole other thing.
Why does she have to “beg” them not to send their stuff. She should just call them up with the phone number on the catalog, and tell them to stop sending catalogs to her address.
The police should go over there, she says she has 20 dead 6-year-olds in her house.
Sometimes kids who are more at risk have what we call magical thinking, Saunders said. They don't truly understand the consequences of the things that they're doing.
I assume this mother doesn't have a TV in her house, and doesn't allow her son any internet access, right? Because apparently seeing a gun will magically cause a kid to want to kill people, according to the medical expert......
Someone should tell all those administration types who claim that violent movies and video games don't cause problems -- there seems to be a disconnect here.
seriously, I don't think I'd let my son near this "psychologist" -- she sounds like a quack. Maybe she is treating the boy, and wants an excuse for how poorly he is handling things.
The stigma of mental illness is serious. We don't want to vilify these individuals, children and teenagers and adults. They need our help, they need our support, Saunders said.
More quackery. See, the "stigma" is what hurts them. And so we'll handle it by singling them out, telling the world they have mental illness and can't be trusted, and teach them they they will not survive without our constant care and attention.
Because THAT will certainly make them feel better about themselves.
Again, the boy has "ADHD". Which, contrary to some opinions here, is real, and can be treated (I agree it is way over-diagnosed), but is hardly a "mental illness", it is simply an obstacle to certain abilities, that can be corrected with diet or medicine, like having a low metabolism or needing glasses to see clearly.
It shouldn't have to be so difficult to get help for your kid and to get a gun catalog to stop sending catalogs, Amy said.
I sent my kids to public school, so it was impossible for me to "deal" with unwanted influences. And I didn't have the fortitude to throw out the TV, or to lock down the internet, or two do background checks on all their friends. And I certainly couldn't keep them from seeing my in-laws.
So, unwanted influence was just a way of life. Plus, the government is just one big unwanted influence.
The story says the mother threw the catalogs out without letting her son see them. So he never saw the catalogs, and no harm was done.
There's this newspaper, the "Washington Examiner", in my area. They drop papers at my driveway a couple of times a week. I don't read it. Occasionally, I'll jump through some hoops, and get them to stop delivery. Then a few months later, it starts up again.
He probably was, but IF and it’s a big IF that the mother actually contacted them and sincerely told them why, it would not be a big deal to add the code to create a name and address block.
I kind of doubt the mother is truthful about her efforts to get them stopped.
and be darn sure he doesnt have any possible access to your gun safe.
Don’t take him out shooting either!!!
