Mother Begs Gun Retailer to Stop Sending Catalogs to Mentally Ill Son
NBCCT ^ | Mar 6, 2013 | Jo Ling Ken

A Norwalk mother says one of the country’s top gun retailers, Cheaper Than Dirt!!, has been sending her underage son gun catalogs after he ordered them online, despite her repeated requests for them to stop.

She says her son is mentally unwell and, since the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary, she is concerned. To protect her family, NBC Connecticut has concealed her identity. For the story, we will call her Amy.

“I can't get a gun company to stop sending my 15-year-old son catalogs,” Amy said. “The things that happened in Newtown are happening in my home. I have a kid with issues, and he's fascinated with guns.”

Amy told NBC Connecticut she discovered the first Cheaper Than Dirt! catalog in her mailbox at home in late December, about 10 days after the shooting in Newtown.

“I saw there were guns all over the front and flipped it over and I saw it was addressed to my 15-year-old son,” she said.

Her son, who has been diagnosed with ADHD and has criteria to be bipolar and sociopathic, told her he had requested it.

I too am totally perplexed.

So, is this 15 year old so violent that through fear or force he has total control of the mail? His access to the mailbox cannot be stopped by any means his mother can provide? Mailbox lock? PO Box to forward mail? Nothing?

If this mother believes that her son is fully capable of causing another Sandy Hook, she needs to start calling people non stop until she finds either the help or secure facility this kid needs so he doesn’t harm others.

Tear out the tv set. Disconnect the internet. Control the environment to the extent possible.

Am I missing something?

Maybe she is covering all her bases.

Something *bad* happens....and she can say.....*I tried to get help. No one would cooperate with me.*...*It was the evil gun lobby.*

Oy!

""He said 'Oh Mom, can I see it, can I see it?' And I said, ‘No.’ He's never seen any of them," she said."

Mom's gonna have even more fun censoring the mail when he finds out about "girls"!

Sounds like the best response yet, Bobalu. I can’t fault her for not wanting to raise a monster, and if she thinks there could be a problem, she knows her kid better than anyone else.

According to the article, the only thing that seems to be wrong with this boy is ADHD and “criteria to be bipolar and sociopathic” (whatever that means).

ADHD is a learning disability, not a mental illness. Heck, most of ADHD is what, in my day, we referred to as “acting like a boy”. If you look at the classic symptoms, you can see them in most MEN in daily life.

So, they hang the stone of an “ADHD” diagnosis around his neck originally as a learning disability and then use that as a basis to say he may be mentally ill. Can anyone else see where this is going?

I don’t know this young man at all and this concern could be well warranted; but, it could also be that the mother, and not the son, is the one in need of help here.

“I can’t get a gun company to stop sending my 15-year-old son catalogs,”

I can’t get the republican party to quit sending me pleas for money but it’s cool, as long as I own a trash can.

It’s been a while since I’ve looked through a CTD catalog, but I don’t remember seeing guns in one, except airguns. Mostly ammunition and accessories. They might offer black powder guns; I can’t recall for certain.

I’d like to get the kid a subscription to Shotgun News, just to see the mother’s head explode.

Sounds like she’s abdicated her responsibility as a parent and is trying to CYA for fear of future events.

It’s a gun retailer? I’ve only seen ammo and accessories.

Cheaper Than Dirt is more expensive than gold. After Newtown they jacked their prices to ridiculous levels. Their latest catalog has no prices at all in it. You have to call for the price. I will never order from them again.

Yes I agree. If this were a company mailing porn to this kid you’d see the same posters taking the other side of the argument.
