Big cuts spur calls to Congress from irate constituents

(Reuters) - Congress is getting an earful about the big spending cuts beginning to hit government services from worried and irate constituents, including one senator's own spouse.

Democratic Senator Thomas Carper of Delaware said his wife, "my most important constituent," asked him, "Why can't you guys get your act together? Do you know what people think of you guys?"

"I told her that Washington needs to work more like Delaware," said Carper, a former governor of the state. "In Delaware, Democrats and Republicans work together."

They have not worked together in Washington. And so the across-the-board cuts of the so-called "sequester" - which both Republicans and Democrats have said they oppose - took effect Friday night after President Barack Obama and Republican leaders failed to agree on a way to replace them with targeted spending reductions.

Up until the final few days before Friday, when the reductions began because of a law enacted in 2011, constituents urged, some begged, lawmakers to avert them.

The cuts threaten the U.S. economic recovery, could disrupt federal services from airports to national parks, and may force furloughs of hundreds of thousands of federal workers and employees of federal contractors, the administration says.

They sure have. Last time they "worked together" they deep sixed Christine O'Donnell's Senate candidacy.

Thanks DEGOP.

“The sequester, the budget cuts themselves, are actually no big deal. In reality, they’re not cuts at all. They still net out to an overall increase in spending. But make no mistake. The way our leadership in Washington — you know who I’m talking about — has created this poster child for bad leadership, that is a very big deal.”

“Look, the federal government is twice the size it was 11 years ago. We are spending almost $4,000 per person, per year,” Coburn said. “Some of it is not smart. But it’s the only way Washington, Republicans and Democrats, are ever going to get out of both parties some spending cuts.”

It’s been calculated that across the board cuts of about 4% in fed govt spending would bring us back to financial solvency over about 15 years.

Can you imagine the screaming if that was done?

We have the sequester because they did work together.

IIRC, it was part of a bipartisan compromise suggested by the White Hut Occupier-In-Chief, himself.

Republicans have about two weeks to get in front of this and put Obama away - come up with a list of everywhere in government where sequester cuts could be made without hurting anyone - like the hundred billion or so that’s supposedly sitting unused in the remains of lapsed programs all over Washington. Pass - don’t talk about or threaten - pass and send on to the Senate a bill which auhorizes the administration to direct cuts to these safe areas. Require every single Republican in the House to show up at at least one mass press conference to be scheduled every day for one month, to drive home the point to the public that it’s Obama’s choice to lay people off and cut viable programs if he or the ‘rats decline the chance to diffuse the cuts harmlessly. To dream the impossible dream......

As usual the “first idiot” gets a pass.

You are under estimating Obama. These are the culmination of all his "Dreams from his Father". His sequence of plans has been played out to perfection. In 4 years he has been able to bring the nation almost to its knees financially, destroyed its international credibility and created a magnificent rupture among the citizenry. Within the next 4 years, unless stopped, he will have turned the USA into something resembling Hitlers Germany, Mussolini's Italy, Mao's China or any one of the other dictator run states. Ask yourself if you really thought that this is where we could be in 4 years when he first was elected? Ask yourself now where you think he can take us in 4 more years, especially if he succeeds in destroying the Republican credibility and the Tea Party strength in the next two years, as seems to be his plan. Germany was a leading nation of Europe in science, music, technology and art when Hitler came to power. In 6 years he had begun his extermination of the Jews and his conquest of all of Europe. History..history...history. And the people cheered him on with Heil's and salutes. Obama is, as we speak looked upon as blameless by the masses. The few dissenting voices are being threatened. Quidado America, quidado the world if this leads to an upset in the balance of world powers. Who will be there to put it right if America cannot?

They have a point. When a politician gives his constituents a pink slip, they will be certain to return the favor in the next election.

Carper is sooo full of it. Work together like we do in Delaware??? The Democrats control all three branches here and don’t pay any attention at all to the Republican minority. They are as bad or worse than the clowns in Washington DC.

If you think about it that makes sense. Both sides are disowning it blaming the other because spending cuts are unpopular.

Last year Republicans spent the year talking about how terrible it will be.

So the storyline is “They just cant get their act together and work together”

Simple solution : we need to blame Obama.

Here we go. Rats now jumping on the bandwagon that they were for the cuts.

What’s going to happen is nothing. Then the Demorats will take credit for it.

the sky is falling the sky is falling......let them all go home with no pay and just shut the government down. As far as I can tell they do us no good what so ever. Bring all the military home and place them shoulder to shoulder along our southern border and tell them shoot to kill. I am sick of all of it

Aprt of the 0bama pln. Poison the well, blame the R’s. My way or the highway..and this is the first time he didn’t get his way. So he goes crying and wining to the low info voters, assisted by the lapdog press core. lather rinse repeat.

Impeach this absolute horror of an elected individual. Barring that, make it so uncomfortable for him that he resigns. I could see it happening. The man doesn’t want to work anyway, just party and campaign. Nothing more.

Not exactly, but they will take credit for the deficit reduction and blame Republicans for any pain caused by ‘the cuts’.

Republicans would do the same thing if they could get away with it.
