Interesting thought but chances are Afghanistan would have still ended up under Taliban control when the Soviet Union collapsed so the results would have been the same.

In retrospect we shouldve aided the Soviets in the 1980s, rather than countered them. Really? We supported the mujaheddin through the Pakistani ISI, who later formed and bankrolled the Taliban after the Soviets pulled out. We still bankroll the Pakistani regime and ISI.
