BBC journalists on Monday began a 24-hour strike in protest at compulsory redundancies, causing possible disruption to the broadcaster's television and radio output.
Members of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) walked out at midnight (local time and GMT) at the end of Sunday's programming, over job cuts which are expected to affect BBC Scotland, Five Live, the Asian Network and the World Service.
The strike was called after meetings failed to produce agreement over the redeployment of 30 employees facing compulsory redundancy. Nine of the 30 jobs are at BBC Scotland.
NUJ general secretary Michelle Stanistreet explained: "NUJ members across the BBC are taking action to defend jobs and quality journalism at the corporation.
"They are angry and frustrated at the poor decisions being taken at the top of the BBC -- decisions that are leading to journalists being forced out of their jobs and quality journalism and programming compromised."
A BBC spokesperson said the organisation understood "how frustrating and difficult situations involving redundancies can be," but said it was disappointed by the walkout.
"We are working hard to ensure that we succeed in getting staff redeployed wherever we can and will continue to work with the unions to ensure that their members receive the right redeployment support," added the spokesperson.
The NUJ said that 7,000 jobs had been lost at the BBC since 2004 and is demanding a six-month moratorium in redundancies.
The corporation is cutting around 2,000 jobs over five years as part of its Delivering Quality First programme.

And to have a damned TV in the UK......you have to buy a “TV License” (which funds the BBC). There are always rumors going around that there are vans equipped with radar to see which homes have tellies that are “illegal”. Then, the dreaded knock on the door.

I’m sooooo sick of them being the “bee’s knees” as “journalism”. They are the equivalent of the “Guardian”. Or....another equivalent......”Al Gore Zeera”.
Meanwhile.......their TV hosts are free to molest children over decades. And not a damned thing is done about it.

Yes, it IS crazy to pay a frikkin’ TAX to own a TV.
Just remember, peeps. The UK has a VAT (value added tax) that some are pushing here.....as apposed to the fed/state/local taxation. When I lived there......the VAT was astronimical (17.5%). You don’t “pay the tax at the till”. The price is added on the the product. So, basically, the price of the product that is listed is what you pay.....as regulated by the gov.

The BBC World News channel has come to Comcast subscribers like me in the US after several years of seeing BBC America which came first.
They must get money for each subscriber. Some ads run on the news channel along with the BBC America one.
I have the news channel up now and the anchorman looks like someone I haven’t seen before. Must be a management guy.
Dont confuse BBC News with the rest of the BBC, anymore than you’d confuse Fox News with Fox TV.
Whilst like you, I have my problems with BBC News, as a Brit, I still enjoy, admire and will stand up for BBC TV and its programmes. From sport and nature to drama and comedy. The BBC still makes superb programmes in many areas.
Their nature documentaries are second to none, their sports coverage is still very good, they still make first rate drama and comedy, and their arts and documentaries are superb (their BBC4 satellite/cable arts and documentary channel is a national treasure).
I think Fox News is dreadful, but I still like Fox TV’s shows.
I am amused at the hypothetical possibility that US “journalists” could go on strike, too.
I’m not sure that they could do anything less than they do now - which is simply regurgitating democrat talking points and sending RSVP’s to insider social engagements.
