How much global warming can we expect from this extraterrestrial event?
Maybe I should put in for a grant to study this now...

Think of the benefit to the world if it had exploded above Mecca. Ironic fate for a bunch of meteorite worshippers. What a waste of space debris.

That’s the biggest icehole I have seen near Chelyabinsk!

A Russian policeman works near an ice hole, I feel his pain. I work with a few ice holes myself.

20 km/s is something like 65,000 ft / s
That would definitely leave a mark.

NASA is saying more like 7000-10,000 tons. A 15 meter diameter sphere of iron would weight about 14,000 tons, of water like 1,700 tons (displacement of WW-II destroyer). A one ton sphere of iron would be about 1.3 m (four feet) across.

From the article...
...and unlike meteorite showers they can be dangerous, scientists explained.
No kidding!

"Astronomers around the globe didnt notice the object coming either,..."
Now that's a REAL problem. Climate Change indeed.

This is as close to witnessing anything like this as I've ever been. And this is nothing in comparison but it is pretty awesome.

Why do they keep calling it a meteorite?
It is only a meteorite after it hits the ground.
Before that it is a meteor.
