Think of the benefit to the world if it had exploded above Mecca.

The world could also consider itself lucky that the meteor didn't go over Mecca and destroy it. The Muslims all over the world would have immediately blamed it on Israel and the U.S., and wWIII cold have broken out. Jumping to conclusions would have been first, and investigations would have come after war had already broken out.
