Suppose anyone could be hiding anything from us?

Didn't NASA know that the tiles on the shuttle were damaged but chose not to tell the astronauts? I'd have to imagine that if NASA or any other governmental agency knew of an impending catastrophic strike they'd withhold that info since it wouldn't prevent said impact and would only cause panic among a doomed populace anyway. That's assuming a strike in or near North America.

NASA doesn’t control world astronomy.

I’m catching a flight early tomorrow a.m., Detroit to San Diego. All this is making me a little more nervous and uneasy than usual.

Don’t fret. The chances of your plane being hit by a meteor are probably about the same as being attacked by a shark in the Detroit River.

You don’t have much to worry about; these (meaning the West Coast Fireball, not the Russian one) are fairly routine. However they are going to get much more media attention and are much more likely to be posted on FR from now on, which inevitably will lead to the impression that there are suddenly a lot more of them.

Yep. Now every time someone sees a “shooting star” or “fireball” and captures it on video, uploads it to YouTube, it will be “BREAKING NEWS” on Fox, CNN, etc. and even here perhaps. People will say “Why all of a sudden are there all these meteors?” when these actually happen all the time, not the one in Russia per se, but even that type of event, while “rare” in over the course of a human lifetime, is not really all that rare on a cosmic scale.

And speaking of sharks, I am reminded of this:

Summer of the Shark

They certainly don't. But who said they do? I merely implied our government would keep us in the dark regarding a pending catastrophe. Other organizations may choose to release such information. NASCAR doesn't control world racing.

There was one in Texas a few years ago on a Sunday morning. If I had looked out the church windows, I might have seen it that day.

Most estimates were the original size was eight to ten feet across. Someone found the crater and a marble sized iron meteorite.

Yeah, right. Last night Foxnews gave the Russian meteor maybe 10 seconds, tops. CNN and MSNBC ignored it completely. As for the asteroid that passed so close, all three networks completely ignored it. They had “important” stuff to talk about, like how bad it smelled on that cruise ship. If you had watched those networks last night, you would never have known about the Russian meteor.

I’m listening to CBS radio ... they had a program playing Depression-era dance music, but just broke in and announced something about explosions (possible volcanic activity?) on Mars.

I wonder if it’s related ...

Really? Then you must not have been watching the same Fox News and CNN I was last night (I never watch MSNBC BTW, not even for a millisecond). Yea the Carnival cruise ship got a lot of coverage, more than it deserved IMO, but I saw several stories, a lot more than 10 seconds worth, that covered both the Russian meteor and the close passing of the meteor – video clips and some interviews with witnesses and some scientists. And they were still covering the story this morning.

Rick Moran at American Thinker posits that the government wouldn't be able to keep it a secret because there are so many excellent amateur astronomers with powerful telescopes as well as privately-financed professional astronomers who are tracking NEO orbits:

Would government tell us if we were about to be hit by an asteroid?

That won't last long. In general, the public's 'popularity' trend is only good for two weeks.

Well, out 'internet' would certainly change.

Kind of like this

12 I watched as he opened the sixth seal. There was a great earthquake. The sun turned black like sackcloth made of goat hair, the whole moon turned blood red, 13 and the stars in the sky fell to earth, as figs drop from a fig tree when shaken by a strong wind. 14 The heavens receded like a scroll being rolled up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place.

10 The third angel sounded his trumpet, and a great star, blazing like a torch, fell from the sky on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water— 11 the name of the star is Wormwood.[a] A third of the waters turned bitter, and many people died from the waters that had become bitter.
