Jodi Hernandez reports on the cosmic close encounter that the earth is experiencing tonight and the real one Russia experienced this morning.
On a day that had a lot of people talking about meteorites and asteroids, a fireball of some sort was seen streaking across the Bay Area skies.
The fireball was seen around 7:45 p.m.
There are reports into the newsroom from people as far north as Fairfield and as far south as Gilroy. It was also seen in Sacramento, Newark, Walnut Creek, and St. Helena.
It was bluish in color and appeared to be heading straight to the ground, according to one viewer in Santa Clara.
"I saw that meteor/fireball over Solano County after spending the day reporting on asteroids and fireballs," said NBC Bay Area reporter Jodi Hernandez.
Candice Guruwaiya told us on Facebook she saw it in San Jose. "I was leaving Safeway on Branham and Snell when I saw it. It looked like it was headed for the Capital Auto Mall area. It was a bright green when it first appeared, then it went to a bright yellow. It was awesome!" Guruwaiya posted.
Gina Johnson also saw it in San Jose. She also posted on our Facebook page that she had just walked out of a Fresh and Easy in San Jose's Willow Glen neighborhood. "It looked just like the one I saw back in October except it was a little smaller. It was greenish in color just like the one on October. Everyone in the parking lot stopped and looked at it," Johnson posted

What a spectacular sight -- first time in my life I've seen a meteor fireball.

Aw heck, it did not wipe out SF? I know, shut up, a few conservatives still live there, and Frankenfinswine was probably not home.
Maybe the Mayan calendar was a few months off.
I've seen lots of shooting stars and a few meteors, but never that close or spectacular.

It was about a week before Christmas 1995. Some of my coworkers and I were walking to our cars, shortly before midnight, when there was a streak of light and a brilliant flash of light high over our heads. It was bright enough that it cast shadows off the light poles in the parking lot. I never saw anything on the news, but I figure the only thing it could have been was a meteor exploding high in the atmosphere.
Is that a San Fran joke...or do you really want to know?
I saw it from Tacoma Wa. (Puyallup).
Sitting outside at my fire pit facing south.
Lasted about 1.5 seconds headed straight down.
Looked white from here. Bigger than any comet I ever saw.

Here in AZ we see them occasionally but none ‘big’.
A couple years back I saw the result of Vandenberg losing a rocket at altitude. It was indescribable other to say the shockwave and colors resulting from fuel dispersal just as the sun was setting made for an apocalyptic picture....and I had no camera...grrrrr.....
This was around 2004-2006ish.

Wow, all the way up in Puyallup! I swear it was landing only a few miles from me. I was guessing 1.5 seconds duration as well. I just happened to be looking at that spot while driving, too — maybe 20 degrees off the roadway to the right. Luckily I was on an elevated section of the expressway, so I was above all the local trees and buildings and had a clear view.
Had to be a different one.

How many more rocks are up there are coming down? How big are they and where are the headed? I heard there were reports of ‘lights’ over Burbank last night. Are meteorites fracturing and raining down in various spots in tiny bits?
They think the one that exploded over Russia was part of a meteor shower and not a lone object. Some meteor showers can last as long as 10 days. Lets hope there aren’t more like the Rssian one headed our way.

Only racists would bring up an astronomical event that happened a few million years ago. It just goes to show you that dispite all the good things Arpaio has done, the stain of our history colors how the other 56 states still see us.

All these meteors in the last few days are the kind of stuff that can give a person a feeling of nervousness and unease.
And by ‘a person’ I mean me.
This is some serious omen level stuff.
I can’t begin to imagine how this sort of thing must have looked to people in the past who had little or no understanding of space.
