A top U.S. Republican lawmaker said on Sunday he would support granting citizenship to children who are in the country illegally in a sign that conservatives who oppose immigration amnesty will be playing defense as Congress takes on immigration reform in the coming months.
Representative Eric Cantor, the No. 2 Republican in the House of Representatives, said Congress could make quick progress on immigration if lawmakers agreed to give citizenship to children - an idea he opposed when it came up for a vote in 2010 as the DREAM Act.
"The best place to begin, I think, is with the children. Let's go ahead and get that under our belt, put a win on the board," Cantor said on NBC's "Meet the Press."
Cantor is leading an effort to improve his party's image as many Republicans worry they will be consigned to irrelevancy in coming years if they do not reach out to the fast-growing Latino electorate, which strongly supports immigration reform.
President Barack Obama has made immigration reform a top priority of his second term in office and a bipartisan group of senators is working to draft legislation that would tackle the issue in a comprehensive manner, rather than the piecemeal approach that Cantor suggested.
Republican Senator John McCain, who is involved in that effort, said his group aims to provide a path to citizenship for all of those who are in the United States illegally, not just children, as long as border security is tightened.
"There are 11 million people living in the shadows. I believe that they deserve to come out of the shadows," McCain said on "Fox News Sunday."

The honor of American citizenship comes real cheap nowdays...

Oh dont worry Eric youve succeeded
You already look like Democrats...
Go to hell Cantor, deport them all!!!!
Define “child”. Who is it, a five year old, or an individual brought into the country at age 17 years, 364 days??
Illegal immigrants: violent boorish party crashers.
Send them home, call police - make them leave.
Citizenship for votes how democrat of them. They need to change their name to Repubacrats.
Small minds do great damage.

Forcing a child to commit a crime is child abuse. Get social services involved, and the illegal alien parents will run back to their homelands rather than try to fight child protective services.
Problem solved!
If they were born here, they are U.S. citizens. Don’t like it? Change the law.
I can't speak for other parts of the country, but the latino kids around here (who I assume are the children of illegals) are fully fluent in both languages. They frequently translate for parents or other older relatives.
The GOP “leadership” has just ordered 2 more pallets of white flags. We are, in effect, a single party country.
And, illegal invaders’ progeny need to go back to their parent’s country and ask to come here. Assuming that they have a right to be here because of an illegal act is nuts.
Does that mean that a bank robbers’ kids get to keep all the money he stole that wasn’t recovered before he was arrested!??
The logic simply doesn’t work!
That’s the way it works money and blackmail rule the day
That was only part of the deal. The deal Reagan made was that the illegals in the country at the time would be granted amnesty and citizenship in exchange for sealing the border. Reagan kept his part of the deal. The Democrats did not keep their part of the deal which was to close the border.
So, how surprised are you?
I never liked Cantor. They can all go to hell as far as I am concerned.
RE: Cantor: children of illegal immigrants should get U.S. citizenship
Well, what to say... if an illegal has a child in the USA, the child IS, by our laws, an American Citizen. He’s not saying anything contrary to our laws if he’s referring to a child born of illegal immigration on US soil.
I might say the same for you.
Where’s the population bomb?
We need all the children we can get.
Seems our DC rats should study up on John Bingham and Jacob Howard.
