Here we go with another freak out about a winter storm. From naming it like a hurricane to generate more angst, to the continuing reminders that it "COULD" be a top ten storm in all time history, the weather guessers are doing the hype dance.
Granted, this one looks particularly nasty, but most sane people will grab some extra milk and get home early Friday before the main bands hit.
Take cover NE FReepers and keep us updated on how it's coming along.
Post lots of pics from your yards and neighborhoods so we can all OOOOH and AHHHH at the precip!!
Above all, stay safe, get off the roads early!!
Ah yes, I hit the packy on my way to my girlfriend’s when they let us off- about noon I think. Remember her trying to move her car to permitted parking areas for a while before giving up. The city made a fortune on tows.
Foolishness must be a survival trait of the young LOL!

The post of the day.
The first flakes haven’t fallen yet and already I am deeeeee-sgusted.
I’m a cranky old yankee, so please make allowances. (Small “y” yankees are the tough old bastards of yore. The big “Y” is some kind of New Yawk aberration.)
New Englanders USED TO BE known for taking adversity in stride. A snowstorm on the way? I’ll fill the wood box. A BIG STORM in the offing? Then I’ll top off the rock salt bucket too. Maybe even a HOWLING BLIZZARD this time? Enough already. Jeez.
This afternoon, I saw lines at every gas pump in town. This for cars that are going to be PARKED for the next three days! And the supermarket parking lot looked worse than Black Friday at Wal-Mart. For God’s sake, why? You dopes will get to the store again in another day or two, no matter how much snow we get, you ninnies. Relax already!
Old yankees like me are never unprepared. Never. Of course I’ve got gas in the car. Of course I’ve got enough food to last a week before I’m down to dried beans and salt pork. (Well, make that six months, a la prepping.) And of course I’ve got a shovel, mittens, boots, a windshield scraper and rock salt.
Hell, I’ve even got a snowblower, a generator and a roof rake in case it gets really deep! I’m dug in and ready for anything God wants to throw at me, man!
But these wimpy, liberal, pissy-pants sheep running to the store screaming for a gallon of milk because there’s a storm coming ... can’t stand ‘em. Lord!
Funny, last year had a lot of snow early. Been pretty depressing since, even an overly dry summer. It is so dry my lungs are hurting. Moved the humidifier right next to me for tonight, see if I get some relief overnight.

I read most of these stories and comments and have to laugh. We lived in western Kansas. Don’t remember anyone even worrying about calling anyone during a storm - but then we had a 12 party crank phone, everyone just picked up the phone periodically and talked to whomever was on the line. Also don’t remember ever having a snow day at school and let me tell you we used to have some pretty deep snow in Kansas. Our teacher’s husband would just hitch their team up to a flat wagon and off they would go, always arriving in time to ring the bell at 8 o’clock sharp. Everyone had at least one horse and I do remember my dad tying me on the saddle so I wouldn’t fall off anywhere along the two mile route, hitting the horse on the rump and away we would go. The teacher’s husband then untied us when we got to school. There was a lean-to where we kept our horses during the school day and then we would begin the long trek back home. Not sure I would be willing or able to do it any more but it was the way we lived and coped with whatever we were handed some 60 years ago.

This is the old 'look at me' syndrome coming from the northeast-centric media...they ignored the Kentucky ice storm and the Tennessee floods from a few years back, but let it snow on the major media centers, and its 'Armageddon!' The same with sports...Boston, New York, and everyone else...
Whatever. Why isn't ANYONE in the media talking about Staten Island?

That had me confused too. I finally figured it out. Out on 128 we got 36". 27" was for Logan. It was the all-time worst because it was actually two storms back-to-back over 36 hours.
You have exactly the same view I do. I’m native MDer and we’re known for being ninnies with winter, but my mother never was wimpy and my father was raised in upper NY and mostly ME.
It’s a big inconvenience, mostly. We’re lucky because all my family lives within 5 min of each other. So if some lose power, we try to head to the others’ houses if it doesn’t come on in decent time. Otherwise, I never saw a great need to go to the store for ANY storm, even the huge 1 3 years ago. We have plenty of food, and the great thing about TRUE winter is, if your power is out, put your perishables OUTSIDE! As you said, you’ll never be worse off than maybe 3 days, and the average American has more than 3 days’ worth of food and toilet paper any given time! So there is no need to panic and take everything off the shelves!
1 time I incidentally went to a grocery store for my weekly right before the big storm of Dec ‘09 (yes, that same season - biggest on record). It was packed. I thought it was because we were a week away from Christmas, then realized there was supposed to be a big storm (it was). Nightmare being in the store then with my exuberant little toddler in his shopping “car”. Yes, it was 20”, but still not the end of the world!
PLEASE do not give those media fops any ideas...

Great post...outstanding! By the way...Monday forecast for Boston? RAIN with a high of 45...this 'catastrophe' will be half-melted and forgotten by next weekend.

1978 was outstanding. Lived in southern Massachusetts on the CT border and we had remembered 42”. The military had to come with equipment to plow our rural area. We survived and I wasn’t a Prepper then. We’ll survive!
Better a blizzard than an ice storm. Those royally stink. Usually massive power outages, trees busted everywhere, etc with those.
I was a kid in 78, but I remember the national guard having to come to clear our road. They had massive payloaders and dumped it all on the golf course across the street.
That was a kid’s paradise. Snow forts, snow ball fights, snow tunnels.
