My nephew is alive today because my sister had a life-saving abortion in 1987.
So will a pregnant woman have the right to kill in self-defense under this law?
But your sister didn’t have a ‘life-saving abortion’.
She underwent a medical procedure to save her life: the unfortunate side-effect of which led to the death of her unborn child or children.
If her medical procedure could have been carried out without killing her child then I imagine she would have done so.
Pregnant women have the right to medical procedures to save their lives. They also retain the right to “kill in self-defense” - for instance if someone attacks them in the street.
However ‘self-defense’ would be a ludicrous way of describing the effects of an operation to deal with e.g. an ectopic pregnancy. ‘Heart-breaking necessity’ would be a better term.
