WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama urged Congress on Tuesday to pass a package of modest cuts and tax changes as a way to delay drastic, across-the-board federal spending reductions that could harm the economy.
But Obama's proposal would only postpone the $85 billion in automatic cuts, scheduled to take effect March 1, by a few months until a larger deal could be reached.

Obama, the phony liar and juvenile president, is far lower than the dregs.
But wasn’t sequestration pretty much the Current Occupant’s suggestion at the time?
Too clever by half, he allowed this “poison pill” to be slipped into the negotiations on the debt limit, probably with the smug assumption the Republicans would be so paralyzed in the face of the consequences, they would buckle and fold up like a cheap tent when push came to shove.
Push has become shove. The consequences will befall us, whether now or later.
“No budget, no money”. Pretty simple answer I would think.
Cut the bastoid off at the pocket book.
You are right. This whole mess was slipped in and passed by a paniced Congress. They fell for Obama’s ruse.
It isn’t over, in a month they will fall for some other Obama ruse.
It’ time to stop playing games and do some real cutting.
Yes cuts will hurt, but the alternative will hurt worse.
Oh, he’s got a plan alright, and it’s right on schedule if you ask me.
I think Limbaugh hit the nail on the head yesterday. So long as the Pubbies behave as if they don’t care about the defense cuts, we can keep Obama and the Dems absolutely soiling their britches over the rest.
And since it appears the Senate is going to confirm Hagel, it is clear they really DON’T care about cutting defense.
Obama and the democrats don’t want to ever, EVER cut any spending. Because then we’ll get used to the lower levels. And he wants us to get used to the higher levels.
Every bureau, agency and programs should receive an across the board cut. Let them trim the fat! Find out which employees are not showing up to work, or sleeping in the closets, or just hanging out, wasting the people’s money.
I’ve worked for companies that cut back. Next thing you know all the plants disappeared, because maintaining them was an unneccessary expenditure, there was no more coffee and bagels, etc. at the meetings for the same reason. We shopped around for supplies to get lower prices. Salaries were lowered, employees eliminated, tasks shifted around to make things more efficient.
Let’s ratchet government spending down, instead of up, beginning with the sequester. When the budget is balanced and a plan to pay the debt off is established and functioning, spend all you like within priorities.
$85 billion cut from 4 trillion dollar projected spending is a draconian cut?
The geniuses in DC should be strung up from the nearest street lamp.
If it could happen to Benito it could happen here.
Indeed it’s the only to stop his loony plans.Let him beg all he wants.
The Republicans have figured out that the sequestration isn’t so bad after all, most of the defense cuts are taking place already. Since the sequestration was Obama’s idea, the Republicans are simply preparing to take him at his word.
Obama is worried because he knows that he won’t get any tax hikes if he lets the sequestration deal go forward. He won’t have anything to hold over the heads of the Republicans.
