NATO chief: EU must spend more on military

NATO chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen has urged EU countries to spend more on defense despite the economic crisis or risk losing US solidarity.

He said in a foreword to the alliance’s report on 2012, out on Thursday (31 January), that: “If current defense spending trends were to continue, that would limit the practical ability of NATO’s European nations to work together with their North American allies. But it would also risk weakening the political support for our alliance in the United States.”

He added NATO is still “the most important military power in the world.”

But he also warned: “The security challenges of the 21st century—terrorism, proliferation, piracy, cyber warfare, unstable states—will not go away as we focus on fixing our economies.” …

Rasmussen is using a ridiculous straw man argument. Empowering an entity that fundamentally hates the USA will not be any boon to transatlantic “solidarity” to be sure.

Actually, that’s one of the fun problems the EU is about to have. They have relied for so long on the US military as their shield that they were able to take most of the money they would have spent on defense on social programs. Now the US is pulling back and highly unlikely to be able or willing to defend Europe, especially as pretty much everyone in the US is tired of foreign wars. Even more especially if we appear to be doing all of the heavy lifting yet again.

Once that finally sinks in, Europe is going to have to choose - socialist feel good programs or national defense. I await the shrieking from Euro-lefties either way. :D

Our Kenyan POTUS is disarming the U, S, of A as fast as he possibly can.

We will not be able to defend them in the VERY near future even if WE WANTED TO, which we don’t.

Why bother, when they are half-enemy (muzzie) already?

The “Euro-righties” are nothing like American conservatives though; they are more like those lefties in a lot of ways. They are no more worthy of power than the lefties.

Didn’t say they were. Just want to watch the screaming as the “we have all these social programs so we’re superior” type get what’s coming to them and the model held up by so many American leftists collapses in an irrefutable manner indicative of total failure.
