WASHINGTON (JTA) Jewish organizations praised President Obamas immigration reform proposals, as well as similar measures offered by a bipartisan group of U.S. senators.
In addressing the problem of the 11 million undocumented people in the Unitd States, Obama at a speech Tuesday in Las Vegas stressed the need to enforce current laws and create a path to citizenship.
Mark Hetfield, interim president and CEO of HIAS, an organization that deals with migration and refugee resettlement, said he is more encouraged than we have been in years that our leaders will finally create a just system for immigrants and refugees.
Now is the time to fix a broken system that includes all kinds of artificial, technical barriers that deny asylum to persecuted people, he said.
The Jewish Council for Public Affairs also welcomed the proposals.
We are eager to work with both Republicans and Democrats, both Congress and the president, to finally see immigration reform passed," said chair Larry Gold. "Not only will these proposals strengthen our country, but the bipartisan cooperation behind them could mean the start of a new era.
The American Jewish Committee also applauded the efforts for immigration reform, calling them encouraging.
Immigration is a key factor in bolstering Americas economic strength and democratic pluralism, said Richard Foltin, director of national and legislative affairs for AJC.

The people being dealt with in the USA are not migratory tribes, nor are they refugees needing resettlement. They are not stateless persons without citizenship.
Most all of them are from the wealthiest nations on the planet!
They have a place ~ a nation ~ to return to. Americans don't. We are stuck with our own country. We want to keep it.
“enforce currant laws...” When do we start that, Barry, the illegal alien himself.
Why don't these Jewish groups support resettling these people in Israel then? I would think Israel would welcome any 3rd worlder looking for a handout, given how Jewish groups demand the US open it's wallet and territory to anyone who wants to squat.
These are LIBERAL Jewish groups backing Obama. There are also liberal Irish groups that back Obama... that doesn’t mean all Irish back Obama...
This is definitely not unexpected.
A little later this year maybe they can all learn to speak Spanish and better yet, join the Catholic church too.
How can a class of people not learn from the lessons of Europe in the 30’s and 40’s about being taken over by another class of people? It just boggles the mind!
I am a strong Backer of Israel, but American Jews are starting to piss me off.
If youd like to be on or off, please FR mail me.

In all fairness, wearing the leftist label is paradoxically ironic with Jews, because it effectively makes them “anti-Jews”, since all leftists but Jewish leftists hate Jews (though many Jewish leftists hate Jews as well.)
It is tragic that so many Jews and Israelis are sensible, but are tarred with the same brush as leftist Jews, whose opinions dominate in the media, as they are most fanatical and scream the loudest.
In all fairness, America has much the same problem, because there are enough stupid people here to elect and reelect Obama and Clinton, and even give a term to Carter. It is a shame that sensible Americans are tarred with the same brush as such people.
“I would think Israel would welcome any 3rd worlder looking for a handout”
They already have them. They are called Palestinians.
Israeli Jews are not self-destructive like US leftist Jews.
These are mentally ill leftists who eat lox.
Now it’s official. This “reform” package is a deadly pox on the country. Fight it tooth and nail. We know this because:
1. Obama proposed it; and
2. “Jewish groups” of reflexive libtards are endorsing it.
