Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard surprised voters on Wednesday by announcing that national elections will be held September 14, in a country where governments have traditionally given the opposition little more than a months notice to keep a strategic advantage.
September 14, 2013, falls on Yom Kippur, leading former opposition leader Malcolm Turnbull to post on Twitter that he was deeply disappointed that Julia Gillard chose to hold the election on Yom Kippur the most solemn and sacred day of the Jewish year.

It’s a message, no doubt. They have calendars.
Be like setting an election in Israel on Easter or something.
Gillard is a Marxist. The only religious group they care about now are the radical Moslems. Christians, Jews, Copts, Buddhists, etc. don’t count because they are dhimmis.
Time to retire this red bitch ASAP.
IIRC, it’s against the law NOT to vote in Australia. Observant Jews are being given the choice to violate the law of man or the law of G-d.
I hope like h*ll that this is a mistake, because if it isn’t it’s an attack worthy of Ahmadinejad.
Hope Australians make the right choice and elect someone else, she is done a poor job of representing them.As for the date,it just goes to show how careless these people are.

well, not really. There are 110,000 Jews in Australia. That is out of a population of 22 million, so about 0.5% of the population. I don’t like Gillard, but I doubt this was due to any malice on her side
Why isn't there an outcry against scheduling elections on Shabbat?
Looks like they normally have their elections on Saturday.
That was my point. Why make a deal out of scheduling elections on Yom Kippur when they are regularly scheduled on Shabbat--Judaism's holiest day of all?
