Reid declines to endorse Feinstein's assault-weapons legislation
The Hill ^ | January 29, 2013 | Alexander Bolton

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) on Tuesday declined to voice support for Democratic legislation that would ban assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition clips.

Reid said he would bring gun-violence legislation to the floor and open it to a lengthy amendment process. But he declined to endorse the assault weapons ban introduced last week by Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), which has the support of the 2nd- and 3rd-ranking Senate Democratic leaders.

“She’s talked to me about her assault weapons. The new one. She believes in it fervently and I admire her for that. I’ll take a look at that,” he said in response to a reporter's question. “We’re going to have votes on all kinds of issues dealing with guns and I think everyone would be well advised to read the legislation before they determine how they’re going to vote [on] it.”

Feinstein’s bill would ban the sale and manufacture of more than 150 types of semi-automatic weapons, including handguns with fixed magazines capable of holding more than 10 bullets.

Republicans have raised doubts that Reid will even bring gun-control legislation to the Senate floor. Reid helped defeat an effort five years ago to renew the federal assault weapons ban, which expired in 2004.

Reid dispelled the GOP speculation.

He said he has told his colleagues he will do everything in his power to “bring legislation dealing with guns and violence, generally, to the floor”.

Reid said that Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) has told the Democratic caucus his plans for holding hearings on gun violence.

Leahy has introduced legislation to help prosecutors crack down on “straw purchasers” of firearms later used in crimes.

"I think everyone would be well advised to read the legislation before they determine how they’re going to vote [on] it.”

Oh sure. Harry thinks that NOW is a good time to start that practice.

This is what they should be doing with each piece of legislation.

Asshat.

Agreed...If they read any gun control bill before voting on it it’ll be a first.

“She’s talked to me about her assault weapons.” - Harry Reid about Dianne Feinstein.

Harry Reid says that Dianne Feinstein has assault weapons! We REALLY need to make hay out of this one!

If Dingy Harry won’t endorse it, then it’s DOA.

Wait for Dingy Harry and Joe Munchkin to introduce the much more reasonable black gun ban, that only bans 100 types of rifles ...

They'll call it a compromise, you see, and demand that we kneel before them.

If Harry is hesitant, then at least a dozen other Democratic senators are feeling the same way. At this point, I don’t think the President’s machine is able to maneuver as much as it did six months ago.

Feinswine's bill has already done what it was designed to accomplish: almost completely empty the gun stores.

Ammo in military calibers (.223/5.56, .308/7.62x51, 9mm) has VANISHED.

If they started martial law now, a lot of people would be in a world of hurt, quick.

The #1 goal of the Dems, by far, is only to give Dem Senators a chance to vote against Feinstein-type disarmament laws.

To show these Dems are “conservative, mainstream, and bipartisan and moderate” before the next election!

That’s their main goal.

Way down their wish-list is passing a bill that seems reasonable to their liberal base in the media and having them beat up Republicans for voting against it. That’s just too hard to win at on this issue.

In the last election the NRA did not endorse anyone.

I would counter that some of the older guys are really running out of steam over this fight-the-fight mentality. They can remember easy days back fifteen years ago, and this agenda-White House scheme isn’t paying much except constant hassle to perform in front of the camera to explain stupid policies.

I just got another 100 rounds of 5.56 and 100 rounds of 32 APC and 40 rounds of 38 S&W Special + P from my supplier but the 5.56 and others were at a dear price! It is hard to go and sight in and practice at the prices paid. Each round is now precious.

Reid and the NRA both will endorse legislation to have a more comprehensive background check system.

MARK MY WORDS.

Yep.

I just got a new carbine last month and it is so fun to shoot!

Ran 150 rounds through it and had to quit. Ammo is just too scarce. I’m back to a stockpiling mode. Anytime I see ammo for any of our calibers I buy at least one or two boxes. Slowly but surely the inventory is building back up.

Assuming he’s not lying, this is good. It’s nice to know that the Dems have a point to where public perception and the ballot box makes them blink a bit. Sounds like they may have gotten a dose of reality over their martial law and confiscation wet dreams, especially by county and state govts. Time will tell.
